MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Opus 35DE8 with Pertronix Ignitor

Hello all:
Has anybody modified the Lucas Opus 35DE8 distributor installing a pertronix Ignitor kit?
I know it can be done to the Buick distributor, the purpose is to eliminate some wiring from the Luminetion electronic ignition and the ballast resistor the ignitor doesn't need the ballast resistor.
Any comments?

Opus, Lumenition *and* Pertronix? That's three different ignition systems. Have you scrapped the Opus electronics and substituted Lumenition trigger and electronics already? Why would you wan't to scrap the Lumenition full electronic ignition and go back to just an electronic trigger, or are you contemplating replacing the Lumention trigger with the Pertronix? If the latter I would not be surprised if it didn't work, and maybe even damage the Lumenition, because the Lumenition almost certainly has a low-voltage high-impedance trigger into its electronics whereas the Pertronix is a high-voltage low-impedance device. But I'm only guessing.

Hi Paul:
At this point i have the Luminition system, I want to replace the whole luminetion system triger,wiring,module,ballast resistor,etc., with the much simple Pertronix Ignitor. The idea is to clean up and simplify the engine bay.

Hi Romney,

If you have the 6v coil and external ballast you will need to either keep them both or remove both and fit a 12v coil. The Pertronix will work with both. In either case you will be able to remove the Lumenition system completely. However some Lumenition systems come with a special high-performance coil. In this case the coil should be removed along with the rest of the system and a new one substituted.

If you have a ballasted coil, remember that the Pertronics unit requires a full 12 volts to reliably trigger it. When I installed one in my Factory GT V-8, I ran a separate 12V switched supply to the red wire of the Pertronics unit, instead of hooking it up to the + side of the coil.

A lot of folks who hook up the Pertronics unit across the coil don't realize that a ballasted system is only operating at 6-9 volts when running, that can cause the unit to misfire.
