MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Exhaust Headers & Carb Height

Two questions

1) With the Rover 3.5lt engine and Edelbrock 2198 Manifold will the Edelbrock EDL-1404 500 CARB still fit under the bonnet?
2) Where can I purchase exhaust headers. Mild tubular steel is what I have in mind!

Thanks

Bruce

Bruce,
I don't know how helpful this will be for you, but...
I have a Buick V6 in an MGBGT. I have the six much lower than you can put the V8, as it is 5.25" shorter, and can go behind the steering rack instead of over it. Two weeks ago I put an Edelbrock Performer manifold and 500CFM carb on it. With a two inch tall air filter, a hole in the hood was required. Now I have to find a scoop that I like.
As for the headers, try Kirk Racing in Birmingham Al. Although, they're not THAT hard to make yourself. Ask me for details if you're interested, and I'll e-mail you a link to where there are pictures of my car with them.

Hi Randy,

I am interested in making some headers, although my preference is for RV8 style rather than trying to thread them through the engine bay.

I am looking at purchasing a 1404 and manifold in the near future. I think the short answer to your carb question is yes. However, If you want the best advice talk to RPi engineering in the UK (they have a website too). They did a damask red '68B with a 4.6 and the 1404. I don't know which manifold they used but they sell both the 2198 and the Offenhauser which is a lower profile. The whole kit with 2198,1404 and aircleaner...around $600 US and add $50 US for the Offenhauser. By the way.. East Coast Rover in Maine is one of their distributors.

Sorry,
forgot to mention that summit racing in the US do a very good (better) deal too(website also). Tuning kit for the 1404 is part no.1486 Regards

http://www.summitracing.com/index.htm are great guys and very reasonably priced. Ive bought various Holley Carbs and kits from them.
By the way my factory 3.9 GTV8 has a 600 double pumper Holley and low rider K&N filter fitted and only needed the bonnet cross stiffener removed to clear.
If you have clearance problems you can always grind a bit off the block thus narrowing it and allowing the engine mount rubbers to slide down lower in the chassis mounts! It worked for me!

Bob,

What manifold did you use?

The manifold that I have use for the Buick 215 is the Edelbrock EDE 2198 It measures 6" from the mounting surface to the base of the carb. The other manifold is the Offenhauser OFF-5165 This manifold is a very low profile. Both manifolds are mid rpm torque, but nothing impressive. Summit is great! Also try PAW some times they are cheaper and carrie a biiger line for GM products. I don't have a web page for them, but their phone # is 1-805-778-1694.

I cant remember whether its the Offy or Edelbrock - which is bad considering I've done 3! I suspect they are Offys. One thing I recommend is to have a boss made by aluminium welding so that the V8 Otter switch (fan thermostatic switch ) can be mounted.

Thanks all for your input.
I have ordered a intake EDL #2198 and the carb EDL-1404 500 CARB from Summit.
Your input certainly put my mind at ease

Thanks
