MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Axle. which oil?

Whats the best oil for the axle.
Hypoid EP90? Is there a better alternative?

mark...I know you also posted on the MGB Technical section...and I concur with the responses there...I personally used Hypoid 80-90w in my stock MGB diff. Should you have a higher performance diff, you may wish to consider the synthetics....Do you run your car year round, what are your driving habits, do you have LSD...et cetera are all questions that should be taken into consideration....regards....rick

Thanks Rick
I have 260hp, 3.07 Crownwheel and pinnion (just fitted) and quafe LSD.
Im into track days so the car is driven very hard regularly reaching speeds in excess of 130mph.

Three years ago I had the axle rebuilt and was never satisfied with the result.
Just want to use the best available oil.

A friend has recommended a lube guard which Im told is semi synthetic sperm whale oil.!

Where do I look for synthetic EP90?

Mark

mark....I purchased synthetic lubricant (and its associated additive) for my Ford 8" with Auburn posi at the local Ford dealership. I would think that any reputable parts dealer on your side of the pond would have the equivalent. just be sure that it is compatible with your LSD....rick

Try Kim Dear at www.magicmidget.co.uk
He got me some semisynthetic for my C, with 225hp 3.9 and a quaife, works well in the gearbox too. Nice!.

If you are thrashing your car on a regular basis, I would have thought the most important issue would be the removal of microscopic (and larger) metal particles which add to wear and tear. might a regular oil change not be more important than looking for an oil with a longer life ?

In the past - I have used a multigrade in a factory diff. - can not remember precise spec. but 140 was the top end.

Happy New Year

I thought I recognised the name.
I did just a few sprints in My Green GT V8 in 2001.Silverstone Curborough and Combe.
You probably dont remember but we have spoken a few times.
What brand was the semi synthetic?

Mark
Mark

I do remember!. Good fun!
I will check on the oil.
May be a couple of days till I get to the garage though........
Happy New Year.

What is the normal oil for a Ford 8inch,non posi, I presume normal EP90?
Dave...
Dave Lowe

85w/140w if I remember correctly....rick
rick ingram

The oil was Rock Oil FD-6.
Gear Oil API GL-5, WO46920.
This is 85W90 I believe., though it could be 75w80......It works just fine for me though, and the gearbox is quieter and no longer runs 'hot'. (I used to use 20/50). Shift is smooth and notch free too.

Thanks Chris.
