MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 3.07 axle conversion supplier?
Has anyone had experience of the V8 rear axle conversions offered by the MGB Hive or other suppliers? I have a 3.07 conversion done by a certain workshop in West London and it has been a disappointment: very noisy. After getting it re- done (supposedly) by the same place it's just as bad and I am thinking of cutting my losses and starting again. |

I had a really bad experience with a company (named after an airport using airport transfers sevenoaks) who fitted a 3.07 CW & P with a quafe LSD. It was very noisy and their second attempt was worse. Also the guys attitude was really bad. I suffered the noisy axle for about a year then Got Clive Wheatley to do it. What a difference. Now I get all my V8 stuff from Clive and am very happy. Cheers Mark MGB GT V8 4.6 |

Unfortunately a great many C W & P's are not produced to the high standards of the originals, and are therefore noisy. It could be set up correctly, just poor product. |

I can also recommend Clive having been a satisfied customer for many years. This includes an axle, although it was for my roadster rather than the V8 as I know he keeps all the standard CW&Ps when doing a conversion. |

Another shout for Clive. Initially he may seem a bit unfriendly, but he isn't really, I think he is just shy. His knowledge and skill is top-rank, and his prices are OK too. |

Thanks to all for your comments. Mark, it sounds like we had identical bad experiences. I didn't realise that Clive Wheatly can supply V8 axles; I shall certainly see what he can offer as I have had very good service and excellent parts (RV8 type exhaust manifolds etc.) from him in the past. I would still be interested to hear from anyone who has bought a V8 axle from the MGB Hive, though. |

I purchased my 3.07 gear set a couple of years ago from Jordan at Performance-British in Stittsville Ontario. Jordan is a supplier of Clive Wheatley V8 parts. After hearing so may horror stories about 3.07 gearsets being noisy after installation, I elected to have Babbit bearing in Columbus Ohio do the install in my mgb housing. I have never looked back...the 3.07 installed properly has given me thousands of quiet, trouble free miles. |

Some years ago, two days before leaving on a European Rally in my B GTV8 the axle suddenly became noisy ... a long story. The short answer was a new 3.07 CW&P supplied by Clive, and fitted by The MG Barn near Fareham in Hampshire. Since then many thousands of miles, mostly rallying, still silent - thank-you Clive. |

I had the ring ad pinion replaced when the V* was installed. It was noisy for one year and than the thing just went out completly. It was not set up from day one. This work was done in a shop in Zanesville, Oh. I have a list of items that was done improperly. I think the only thing that was done right was when my check was taken to the bank! |

Leroy, if you ever decide to do it again, take it to Babbitt Bearing in Columbus, Ohio. They have done a few of these including mine, and all customers are happy. And hey, it's much closer to Marysville! :-) |

Hello again, I have been driving my V8 conversion for tree seasons and fell the need for a 3.07 or a 3.3 CV/P. I have been offered a 3.3 cvp for free but there´s a hitch. The oilplug was out on the rearaxle the crownwheel came from so there is specles of rut on it. Does anyone have any experiance of refubishing a crownwheel with good results? Happy New Year Erik |

Unless they are tiny specks, i.e. not pits, then if they are on the teeth it is probably scrap. I bought a used axle that had the breather missing and rain had gone in that hole to rust the CW&P. The rebuilder said it was scrap, but as I went through a V8 conversion specialist he was able to supply a good standard CW&P to the rebuilder. |

The easiest and cheapest way to convert to a 3.07 rear end is to pick up a used MGC complete axle and swap the entire unit into your car. The swap is relatively easy-the brakes just bolt on, or you could use the C brakes (larger). It needs new mounts fabricated and welded on for the sway bar, I believe, and some minor fabricating for the e-brake. I did it several years ago, and the results have been great. Allan |

Allan, I have tried to source a C rear axle. I know of C -wrecks but people do think they fetch prime money. So I am stuck with what I have. Shipping from the UK is expensive, otherwise an axle from there could have been an option. Cheers Erik |

Could anyone advise an e-mail address for Clive Wheatley. I am doing a V8 conversion and will shortly be needing a 3.07 CW&P. |
