MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - 2.8-3.1 aluminum

Did the 2.8 - 3.1 60 deg

Lets try that again. Did the 2.8 or the 3.1 60 degree chevy v6 come in a all alumium version?
Stan Williams

Yes, there is an aftermarket block from GM that's made of alloy:

Stan,
A GM aluminium block can be purchased for aftermarket use at a cost of around $3,000 for the bare block and not worth the 47 lbs of weight savings for most applications. The 60 degree motors and gearboxes are already lighter then the MGB driveline.

Yeah I was gonna say: "What's the point?"

YOuforgot to mentino the 3.4 liter member of this family. The rear whell drive variant had iron heads adn resided in the 93-95 Camaro & Firebirds. I think the y still make the fwd version of this egine wiht aluminum heads. Care to debate which one is better? Me neither. goto www.v6mgbn.com then select forums for more info. Conversion kits are available for both types.

Yikes, I really can't type. I hit submit before proofreading the prior comment.

The correct link is www.v6mgb.com

The reason I was asking about the aluminum v6 is because I read that the weight of the iron 2.8 was 350lbs, and i'm trying to find an engine for a midget.
Thanks.
Stan Williams

Here is a v6 midget with the 2.8 in question.

Stan, that particular car, the fellow who owns that visits this website on a regular basis, so I would expect he will chime in....

Keep in mind that the motor he used has the TALLEST manifold of all the GM 60 degree motors, except the 3.4L DOHC motor. A 3.4L SFI RWD motor is about 1" lower then that and the FWD motors are only about half inch lower then that. I think if the motor was moved a little, the bulge could maybe be alot smaller. I am currently installing a 3.4L L32 into a spitfire and have done several MG B V6 conversions with the L32 and others.

Yes,I've been following Bills car for quiet a while, nice one to.
Brian, are the 2.8 and 3.4 the same size and weight?
Stan Williams

Stan,
I don't know if you are asking Brian C or Brian M (me)??
The 3.4L probably has a couple more pounds only because they reinforced the block with more webbing and the cylinders are punched out 3.03 mm larger then the 2.8/3.1L- I would guess about 5 more pounds- Very Minimal.

For the MG B I recommend the RWD iron head motors, for the Midget, it is a toss up. The height of a three point four RWD is about half inch lower then that of the FWD motor, but the FWD motor will weigh in at 20-25 pounds less according to what we have all figured in the past.

Look at the weight of various Midget motors- a 948-1275 weighs in around 250 dry if i remember correctly. The 1500 midget (MG MISFIRE) motor is VERY heavy- almost as much as a MG B motor..

Does anyone know the weights of the Spitfire/Midget motor and the MG B motor?

Is that 2.8L listed with FI or carb and with or without all the other items such as starter and alternator and so on?

Got my engine weights from this list, not sure how accurate.

Stan Williams

"Got my engine weights from this list, not sure how accurate."

Not very. Some engine weights are pretty close, while others are way off!

In addition to not being very accurate, there is no indication whatever of what components are included in the weight. In some cases, the intake and exhaust manifolds are included, in some, they are not. Alternator? Starter? flywheel? clutch? Who knows.

As a starting point for planning, this list is usable, but when you get down to the nitty-gritty, it is not really very useful.

Chiming in at last.
Don't have the acutal weight of an iron 2.8, but replaced a 1275 A series and only used one twist in spring spacer per side to maintain ride height. Not much difference I suspect. Probably less with a 1500 lump, same or lighter than an 1800.
