MG MGA - Worn Water Pump

In the last couple of days I have become aware of what can be best described as a hollow drumming groan at idle/low revs. The noise is definately front end. No other symptoms. Is the water pump the most likely contender? - 12 years old. I run an alternator. Only thing I noticed this evening on start-up was a fan belt squeal, even though the belt is taut. Bearing seizing? Does this sort of thing happen often?

Whip the belt off, start her up and see if the noise is still there. If it isn't, stop the engine and spin the pump and the generator by hand to find the culprit.

Aren't you too young to be driving at 12 years old?!

Just got round to doing your test. No noise with the fan belt off. It is the pump. Spins okay and no rocking but I can hear the noise even when spinning it by hand. Off to Bob West tomorrow for a new one, plus loads of other bits and pieces.

I have just got my new pump for the 1800 lump. I believe the bearings are sealed for life. Out of idle curiosity what is the hole underneath the central body (see image) between the 2 bearings? It is crying out to be tapped and have a grease nipple fitted!! Or is it just a drain for miscreant cooling fluid?

It is a drain hole.

All 3 of my pulleys (crank, water pump and dynamo) have always lined up okay but I have to shim between the MGA 7-bladed fan and the 1800 pulley to the tune of 4 mm. This is to avoid the fan blades just touching the alternator pulley/fan retaining bolt. The shim (see image) is designed for the purpose but I do not see it in any of the parts lists I have. Can anyone shed light?

Steve

PS. All soon to be repainted.

Steve Gyles

With your non-standard setup, MGA fan, MGB pulley, and an alternator, I would assume that the shim was made and fitted by the engine assembler. I would not expect to see the shim in the MGA nor MGB parts lists.
