MG MGA - Which exhaust system?

The time has come when I finally have to replace the muffler...which the dpo installed in the early 90's. The current muffler is the Moss Performance Free Flow ...which I kinda liked because of the exhaust note and twin tail pipes. So...now I'm thinking I will buy the Moss stainless steel exhaust system and be done with it for the next 15 years. Thoughts? Opinions? Other ideas?

Hi Frank. Go stainless. It is an indescribable joy to drive past muffler shops and thumb your nose, knowing you wont need their parts or services ever again! Cheers, Glenn

I have had to replace a stainless muffler (the baffles failed, it was replaced under guarantee at 13 years old) and am now facing the issue again on the replacement (5 years old)! The exhaust note is quiet at the beginning, but gets louder as the baffles fail, till the police stop me because it ends up being effectively just a tube from the cylinder head to the back of the car......

I recently purchased the twin box Maniflow system from APT. Unfortunately, the car is currently not drivable, so I can't comment on performance only that it is very well made and that along with the exhaust header, it fits perfectly to an MGB 18V 5 main engine installed into an MGA frame. It is a mild steel unit, but heavy duty wall thickness.

As a technical comment by an electrochemist with corrosion experience, all stainless steels are not created equal. If a magnet will stick to the SS item, the iron content is sufficiently high that it will eventually corrode under usage. (Try it the next time you are shopping for a stainless steel grill - the more expensive grills will be made from non-magnetic stainless.) However, the higher the chromium content (conversely the lower iron content), the more difficult it is to fabricate items from stainless, so most consumer items that are labeled stainless steel are 400+ series grades, which means that they will not last forever, partcularly in a hot, wet environment.

I have what I think is a Falcon SS system on my A. It sounds very nice. Low but not too loud. I can send a recording if you like.

I just recently installed a Falcon SS on my coupe. It sounds nice. It comes in 3 pieces, and mine leaks at the first joint. If you get one, it's probably best to get the joints welded.

I have been running Falcon stainless steel exhaust on my MGA for the past 20 years and 200,000 miles. They don't rust out, but I blow the fiberglass packing out of the muffler in 40,000 miles or less, and it gets VERY RASPY AND IRRITATING. I finally got tired of changing mufflers every 4 years or so, and last time resorted to repacking it in-situ. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/carbs/ex103.htm
