MG MGA - What size fuse?

I'm installing a socket for the GPS unit, and just to be double sure of protecting the GPS, am putting an in-line fuse in the supply line. What amperage fuse should I use?

Gary
have a look at the mains charger/supply for your GPS to see how many amps (or milli-amps) it supplies. It probably is in the region of 0.25 amps and so I would think that a 1 amp fuse would be about right.

I have used a 10 amp fuse in my power socket (cigar lighter type) which is fitted into the rear wooden bulkhead near the battery. The bigger fuse is fitted as I also use the socket to connect a car battery conditioner to the car.

Gary, the fuse would be to protect the wiring, not the device. If the device decides to short itself, its gone!

Art is correct, the fuse is there to protect the supply wire rather than the device at the end of the wire. I remember many years ago when some wag, tongue in cheek stater that a $200 color picture tube will incinerate itself to save a $0.15 fuse. There is far more truth to that than meets the eye. Gary,
I have a 12v outlet behind the passenger seat for the GPS without any fuse - if it is good enough for the headlights it should be okay for a GPS! I sometimes use it for an electric blanket (4 amps) if the navigator reckons Melbourne weather is too cold! I am planning on adding a 12v - USB combo under the dash for the big trip (again no fuses) - comments invited from the peanut gallery.
