MG MGA - Volks air filters

Hi all does anyone know if they were ever painted red instead of black, mine are red and it seems to be the only colour they have on them so either like that from new or someone went to the bother of completely stripping them and repainting

You are up early this morning Gordon. I guess sleeping in the car is a bit hard on the back! Clausager just notes that the air cleaner was painted black.

Hi Steve , I'm allowed back in the house now , only as far as the dogs' bed lol, I've only ever seen black ones but these look fairly untouched

I would have a look at crankcase ventilation with that rocker box. Is it a vented cap?

Steve
Steve Gyles

Hi Steve, yes it is vented but I don't like those covers but having trouble locating a proper rocker cover, also I found the rear air filter back on upside down blocking the holes as you did a while ago, the car had been pinking not under load at low speeds as you would expect if the timing was out but at high speeds when you demanded a little more power I wondered if it would be affecting the advance/ retard as this comes off the rear carb, haven't had chance to try it yet but hopefully might have cured it

Hi Steve that's an MGB one with no vent tube I think

Gordon,

How do you know about the high speed more power issue? Somebody else been driving your car? LOL

Sorry to say that it is unlikely that the filters were red originally. My guess is that they were painted when the aluminium rocker cover was fitted to give the engine bay a nice pimped look! The original black paint was quite thin and soft. With a quick sanding and a fresh coat of red paint, there would be little chance of it reappearing!

Are they new caps on the carb dash pots? could be that the needles have been changed too and you're running a bit weak at high revs.

My car will do the same (pink at high speed, high revs, high load) when using too low octane fuel (95 unleaded). It's more noticeable on very hot days. If I put a tank of leaded fuel in (fat chance these days) it goes away completely. You could try an octane booster or 98 fuel if it's not already.

Hi Neil, car is to be featured soon in Pimp My Ride lol

will repaint filters just for you, have since replaced later black tops with correct brass ones but must check needles will also try additive, you haven't got a rocker cover spare, although Terry Drinkwater has found an old one for me now

Gordon

Bit off your original topic again, but as said above, I too got rid of all my pinking ('tinkling') with 98 octane. When that became too expensive I started alternating half fuel loads between 95 and 98. Not sure what others think of that, but still working 'tinkle' free and not quite so costly.

Gordon, If Terry or Steve's leads fail, I've always got a spare for you mate!
Neil McGurk

thanks Neil , hopefully Terry's will be fine but will keep you posted

Hi Gordon, Nice to see you back in the fold with your "new" MGA. Mine had an aluminium rocker box when I got mine and I replaced it with an original one (chromed) that I found at Stoneleigh mg spares day (although February is a bit long to wait)- cheers Cam
Cam Cunningham

Hi Cam thanks for that nice to be back car is nowhere as perfect as my roaster was but it is like putting on an old slipper a few holes here and there but very comfortable lol

Both "A"'s I have owned were fitted with silver air filter housings. Even the screen was silver. The silver was a thick paint not from a spray can and there was no evidence of black paint under the silver. I know that Clausager says they were all black but my experience so far is 2 for 2 being silver. I wonder......
C Schaefer

Hi my car has only had four owners from new and I have spoken to the last two which takes the car back to 1981 and they had always been red, perhaps it was the undercoat and they forgot to spray them black lol
