MG MGA - Various

Hi

Have installed a later 1.8 MBS (Peter Burgess) engine into my MGA. Will I still need a re-install my choke cable ?

Also, there seems to be a huge diff in price with master cylinders - ebay @ 70 and MGOC @ 140 - my original Master Cylinder seems beyond repair so I need a new one, but can't understand the diff in price...

Advice welcome

The B engine has a choke function on the carbs as well, so yes. You will probably need a richer needle in the carbs if using the original MGA carbs again.

There are two manufacturers of the Master cylinders at the moment. You need to make sure you get the MGA one from whichever supplier you choose ( the midget one looks the same but has a smaller bore).

The Caparo one is the more expensive one and is apparently much better quality - mine bled itself after I fitted it and then had other things to do before bleeding it. When I went back to bleed it two weeks later, I found both pedals firm and no pumping was required. The other brand seems to be a PITA to bleed. I know others have also had good experiences with the Caparo unit. Steve Gyles will also probably have a few comments too.

You have said it all Dominic. In my opinion the Caparo AP unit is much better machined than the competition. It solved all my long drawn out braking issues at a stroke. I had it and a cheepo alongside each other in a dismantled state. The quality of machining of the bores was visually obvious. Well worth the extra money.

I have fitted two Caparo units and they both bled easily and work perfectly. There have been a couple of issues from guys on the other side of the pond and at least in one case does seem to have been a faulty unit. I would have no hesitation to recommend them though.
