MG MGA - Vacuum line

The vacuum line has fractured at the bottom of the separator. Can't be repaired. I have flattened off the end so no air leak to the carb. Can't detect any difference driving.
Is it OK to just bypass the separator and hook up the lines using tubing?

You can do it!

I guess the bulb is to collect gasoline that would normally collect in the vacuum advance diaphragm.

I disconnected mine a long time ago...it never made a difference....Im still waiting to come across a good used one to put back on the car.

Oh I did just get a piece of copper line to replace the missing bulb. Works fine.

Hope this helps.

You should make sure the vacuum advance is working on the distributor...

Hi Art,

All the component parts of the vacuum line are only soldered together so you can rebuild the whole thing if you go to a hardware store and buy a thermocouple for a gas fire or a boiler. These items may be readily available in the US for a couple of dollars perhaps? They have a small copper pipe of about the correct dimension and usually about half a metre long when unwound, all you need to do is cut it and remove the internal copper cable leaving you with a nice new pipe that you can cut to length and re-solder to both ends and the vapour trap(bulb).

Done this before and it works fine, although you need to make sure the pipe is clear after soldering with free air flow.
