MG MGA - Use of spare battery bracket

A recent post was discussing whether to have a second 12V battery for starting. Rather than put an extra battery here (that shouldn't be needed anyway) a better idea is to install a good fitting, sealable, plastic container (Tupperware or similar) in the compartment instead. In this container you can carry all your emergency spares (fuel pump, throttle cable, points, plugs, rotor button, carby seals, generator brushes, fan belt, etc) that you might need one day - better to have them here than in the garage at home and it leaves more room for important stuff in the trunk (boot) like red wine!

Your idea is certainly very practical and one I considered before I used the bracket for my spare battery.

I have never found any problem finding nooks and crannies for spare parts. The spare distributor and odds and sods sit in the long wedge shaped area immediately below the boot locking mechanism. Spanners and documents are under the seat squabs etc.

My logic for going for the battery option was that battery power is usually needed in the analysis of failed pumps, generators and distributors. By the time you realise you have a problem with one of these items you may well have exhausted all the battery juice turning the engine over or running the engine with a failed generator. The second battery gives you that extended analysis time or doubles your distance with a failed generator.

Just my opinion, but I like the red wine idea. I reckon I could keep a few bottles in the folds of the hood!

I have a stainless steel box mounted in the area to carry my tools and bits and bods. Aluminium would have been better but at the time I was able to weld SS far easier than Ali.
The only time I had to use it however was when the car was packed to the gunnals with our holiday things as we approached Cognac in France, fighting my way through all that gear to gain access was a bit of a pain but did the job very well.
Bob (robert) yes I own an MG Dwarf!
