MG MGA - Upholstery Colour

My MGA 1600 MK II which I purchased in SA was a CKD kit assembled in Australia and is Nurburg White with red upholstery with white piping and black carpets.

My question is was the white piping original for the cars assembled in Oz. I have read the CKD history as known on Barneys site but no mention of white piping.
Graham Hamilton

For UK built cars the seat piping was quite often color of exterior paint. For CKD cars in Oz they mixed their own paint colors and made their own vinyl seat covers (not leather), so anything could be different then the UK standards. Get as much info as you can from my CKD pages. If anyone has more to offer on CKD cars I'd be happy to post it.

Hi Graham
I have a CKD car in Carnation Red. I believe it still has the original vinyl seata. They are black with black piping.

Graham, From my experience CKD cars in this country were trimmed with one colour upholstery. I am interested to hear from others.

Hi Graham,
Australian CKD MGA Mk2's definitely had white piping with the red vinyl seats. Black seats also had white piping. Interestingly, 1500 CKD MGA's with tan seats used grey piping matched with grey furflex door seals. Any chance of you letting me know your chassis number and engine number for my MGA Register, so far I have about 70 of the 148 Australian assembled MGA Mk2 CKD cars recorded.

Gary,

My chassis no. is 108140 611 and engine is 16GCUL7705
which is the original engine.

I believe the 2nd owner of the car was Bob Bazzica from MG Sales and Service so will catch up with him one of these days and attempt to get the history of the car.

I now live in Adelaide and have changed my address but NSW still appears on the BBS.

Graham,

To change your address on the BBS have you used the "Customise" function at the top of the screen?

Mick

I have just had another go using Customise but it rejects the change with "the username is the same as one currently in use" so I guess I will stay in NSW

Graham,

I just changed my address from Sydney to Adelaide using the "Customise" function.
I will change it back later.

Graham,
Thanks for the numbers for your Mk2.
Funnily enough, there is a MGA Mk2 on carsales.com.au at the moment which is the sister car to yours, it is 108139/610 with engine number 16GCUL 7704, also Nurburg white. If you want a couple of historical details for your car, email me direct.

My seats are also red (leather) with white piping ( in a black car). I'm not sure but they are probably not original although they have a nice aged patina.

Hi Graham
I too have a 1960 MGA 1600 in Nurburg white and very original condition (albeit paint a bit daggy) - my upholstery is as you described ie red vinyl with a white piping and black carpets.

I came across another Nurburg white MGA this weekend with red seats and white piping which the owner said were the original seats so Garry's comments re originalty seem to be correct, I wonder what the other seat combinations were in Oz and the piping colour.

Hi Brian,

I am sure you will eventually have your MGA in as excellant condition as your Magnette. Seems as if there are a lot of Magnette owners who have MGA's and of course vice versa. I guess they both come from the same era and are very compatable.

I have taken my drivers seat out and stripped it from the frame to replace the piping and find that the seat facing is in fact leather. I do not know if it has been changed during its life as the cars assembled in Oz were supposedly done in vinyl.

The leading edge of the leather has the colour scuffed from the it getting in and out of the car. What is the best way to recolour the leather as it is in otherwise good condition?
G Hamilton

Hi Graham
Yes, the Magnette and the MGA are a pigeon pair. The Magnette is nice in winter and the A does nicely in the spring and autumn. I've also acquired an MGTC to which I have fitted a 4age twin cam motor/5 speed gearbox and 4.5 diff. Outwardly looks like a TC inwardly a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Cheers
