MG MGA - Type 9 gearbox

Hi guys, me again as some of you may know I'm thinking of engine out over the winter, rebore my 1500 and fit a type 9 5 speed box, I've the chance of one locally it's from a 1.8 CVH Sierra don't know what year at present, will this do the trick ?

Jack

That engine was apparently quite rare. Worth checking the primary shaft gear box measurements.

Thanks Steve, yes I have a copy of that drawing you sent to me before, no mention of CVH engine, so I'm double checking. I've messaged the guy and asked him to measure the shaft for me, these gearboxes are getting hard to fined, well the correct ones that is !

Cheers Jack.

Jack,
I would give High-Gear engineering a call, they will tell you if they can make the T9 from the CVH engine work or not.

Also BGH in Essex can supply parts for all types of T9 gearboxes including various gear ratios, they are a first class outfit but not a cheap option.

Or BGH in Kent.

Oops, sorry Alan,
I was a County out!
For us Yorkshire Northeners, anywhere darn sarf is all the same to us! :-)

BGH did a great job on my gearbox though, an extra high first and second gear, with std 3rd
, 4th and 5th.
It has turned out just perfect, with brilliant close ratio gears.

You will find a standard T9 ratio to be a big improvement compared to the MGA gearbox. Colyn is apparently rolling in fields of clover!

Sorry Jack if I made it sound like you needed to upgrade your 1st and second gears because, like Dominic says, you don't.

The std Ford ratios are already a little better than the std MGA with the bonus of an over driven 5th gear.
Plus with synchro on 1st, you can actually use it when you are on the move, which makes it much more usable.

I had my 1st gear ratio raised to give it longer legs ( I don't need a low 1st for towing a caravan for example)
I had the 2nd gear ratio raised to close the big gap I had before between 2nd and 3rd, as my engine seemed to rev too much in 2nd but then when I changed up to 3rd gear, the engine had gone off the power band.

It was an expensive option but I'm hoping that the box will last me for many years, and like it says in the advert, "because I'm worth it!" ( I actually flicked my hair when I typed that!☺")

You are correct Dominic about the fields of clover thing, the new closer ratio gearbox combined with this new 1950cc engine is just brilliant!
I may need to ask Steve to sort me out one of those Lightning braking chutes☺!
