MG MGA - Two questions

1) When replacing the heater shutoff valve there is a paper gasket. Do I need to treat it with anything prior to installation?

2) I need to top off the coolant. I know its supposed to be a 50/50 mix but is there anything else I need to know? Special brands etc.
Tysen

I used blue sealer on my heater valve. No problems.

My personal favorite for any gasket is Indian Head Gasket Shellac.

50/50 with any good brand of ethylene glycol is OK.

Tysen,
Many of us add Water Wetter or Valvoline's Zerex Super Racing Coolant to the coolant mix to keep the engine temps down in the summer. Also, use only distilled water to keep mineral scale from building up in the cooling system.

I take it this question is related to your Reversed Heater Actuator thread below. Just interested to know what you found out.

Mike any recommendations on where I can get the Indian Head gasket shellac in SE mich?
Tysen

Steven,

Thanks as always for you help. Yes indeed part of the same project.

The valve was oriented correctly so the problem lies with the actuator. I focused the short time I had last evening on getting the old shutoff valve off and didn't climb under the dash to se how the actuator is specifically messed up....that's Thursday evenings project.

Old shutoff valve does seem to close completely however it was severely constricted in flow compared to the new one. So just as a preventative I'm going to mount the new one.

As always whilst tinkering I discovered my next project. The previous owner failed to mount the support brackets for the vacuum pipe from the carb to the distributor. Its just sitting there vibrating back and forth.....no wonder it broke off so easily on Sunday.

Tysen
