MG MGA - Twin Cam choke cable routing.

Just curious - Clausager’s “Original MGA” pages 60-62 shows pictures of a RHD car with the choke cable coming through the firewall grommet, then underneath the end of the heater, round the rear of the cylinder head and then looped up, over and down to the carb linkages. Presumably this is the “correct” routing as was back in the day? I’m not an originality nut, as I say, just curious because mine has the cable routed from the same firewall grommet but then up over the end of the heater rather than under it, then clipped to the rear cam cover stud and then down to the carbs linkages. Was wondering if the Clausager route is better from bend/friction aspect, or maybe not important? How are others routed?

I have a really old pic of a RHD and the choke cable goes down lower, not attached to the valve cover and goes down around the end of the heater-
but when you look online at pics it's sort of 50/50 under or over the heater, some with brackets on the cover and some not---The LHD cars all seem to have the bracket with the cable going under the other end of the heater----don't really know enough to answer your question 100% corectly

Thanks Willy. I’ve just experimented with the lower routing and think it looks better than over the cam cover as it was. No idea about “correctness” but it’s ok for me!

Bruce not a twin cam but a pushrod with a crossflow Derrington head. A twin cam choke cable clipped to the shelf under the air pipe and round the side of he heater.

My turn for a question- or two
Using Nick's picture for referance-
Did all T/C's have the mirrored heater box--
And---plug leads--I thought they all came around the front and up over the middle of the front of the cyl. head, but then in the pic they go back'ds and up over the side, I've seen them like this before, I wonder if there was a change date/chassis no. that this changed.

I think I can answer the first part of your question. Yes the heater box was the other way round to avoid the problem my car shows up nicely with the air hose crossing over. The heater air hose won't go past the carbs on the twin cam side so is fed down the exhaust side. Unfortunately, to fit a heater that way round the car has a hole in the shelf about 80mm displaced from the pushrod car towards the twin cam carbs side. The heater is quite different too. I know to my cost as I would like to have a twin cam heater in mine but the heater would collide with the regulator. I went to great expense to obtain a twin cam heater (I now have two) neither fit and I am reluctant to move the heater box hole in the shelf. The cross pipe isn't ideal in looks and might restrict the airflow a bit to the heater. However, I can live with it.
I thought the ignition leads came over the front too as the distributor is at the front of the engine. BW John

Hi Willy,
The first few cars had leads running across the left cam cover, rather than over the front of the engine.

As John knows from previous communication, I made the twin cam heater fit my cross flow pushrod by relocating the regulator half an inch to the left of the original position. Any access to the regulator requires heater removal, which is tedious.
