MG MGA - Tripod Headlamps

I had a pair of original Lucas tripod headlamps, which I wanted to fit on my A. As I took them out of the box, prior to fitting them on the car, one of them slipped out of my hands and landed on a concrete floor. Needles to say its glass lens broke into many pieces. I am now looking for a replacement h/lamp identical to mine. Should anyone has a spare tripod which he is willing to part with, I will buy it outright. It has to be original Lucas brand.

Just check before you lay out good money
I have seen a couple of different versions of them
One had the tripod sitting fairly flat and the other had the tripod at more of an angle out towards the centre of the glass like a pyramid

Frank,

Many years ago my regular driver was a car with P700 tripod lamps and I remember replacing two or three of them with tarnished reflectors. It seemed a shame to bin them with the lovely stove enamelled chromed tripods inside so I dismantled them to save the tripods but I also saved the lenses.

I sold the tripods on Ebay a few years ago but I still have the lenses.

If you are interested I could send you one for you to replace your cracked one assuming only the glass is broken .

They were ,of course, original Lucas lamps with Lucas, '700' and 'Made in England' embossed on the glass.....................Mike

Hi Frank,
I also have a disappointing Tri-Pod Head Lamp storey.
I had a pair of old genuine Lucas period Tri-Pod lamps fitted up on my re=built Coupe.'
Unfortunately, one tripod leg broke away, inside. I wonder how?
Since 700 replicas were available, I bought a pair.
I was advised by a friend, that these had issues. Well, they have---The light beam image on the road is terrible.
Its badly affected by a space in the reflective backing through which a parking light globe would shine.
Our cars did not have a parking lamp in the headlamp.
Also, the Glasses [??] are becoming smokey. As sinshine seems to make
the glass' on some modern cars turn yellow.
I carefully seperated the glass of the damaged lamp from its reflector.
It seems that the chromed tri-pod pieces are made from brass--I am hoping that a jewler might be able to re-silver solder the leg to its rim, under the 700 screw badge.
It will need an accurate supporting jigg, to enable its repair.
Re-placing the glass back into its reflector, without breaking the glass--is going to be a challenge!
So, its Dispair and hopefully, Repair.
