MG MGA - Transmission Vibration again

I have read previous posts. Needed to change a water pump which I did. Drove a few miles a couple of days and all was well. Then went for a 10 mile drive. Never noticed vibration before but did so about 5 miles into the run. Had to really think about it because it was not that severe. Felt it in the gear shift and a bit in the seat and tunnel my leg rests agains. All gears, all speeds, increases as rpms do. If I pull back on the shifter when in forth or second the vibrations increases as I apply gas as opposed to simply cruising. If I coast in neutral I do feel a slower vibration but not sure if I had that before.

Sitting still the vibrations seems normal as before in neutral and with clutch in, in neutral and the other 4 gears all seem normal.

The drive shaft u-joint seems tight. Can rotate it back and forth but that causes the shaft to turn in the rear end and not slop in the u-joint itself.

Ideas?

Thanks!

Something is loose or out of balance. Is the fan belt damaged?

dominic clancy

I had a vibration, I called it a "tick back" through the shifter during acceleration and could hear a ticking, almost clunking sound in first gear.
I just redid the tranny and the laygear had some badly chewed up teeth and the layshaft was worn. I am assuming this was my problem. (Car not back on the road yet so I don't know for sure.)
I hope your situation is something as simple as a u-joint.

Randy,

From your description it would clearly appear to something conected to the rotating part of the engine.

Holding the gear stick back in fourth and second is an excellent way to "feel" the engine.

Given that you have just worked on the water pump I suspect that the fan/pulley is not balanced (somehow misaligned or out of true) - or not tightened?

Checked the pump and fan and all seem right and tight. The only thing I noticed was the belt a bit loose. Generally i go lighg instead of heave on the belt tention. Don't think would make a differnece and have not checked out the final U-joint which I will this weekend.
Thoughts would be appreciated!

Check the generator also as well as the engine and transmission mounts.
With the engine cold and the car sitting still start it and see how much vibration you have, then remove the fan belt and see if there is a change. The water pump may be new but that doesn't mean it can't be the problem, an imbalanced impeller could also be the sorce.
