MG MGA - TDC mark

Hello,
I hope this is not a stupid question. If say there were no timing pointers on your timing cover how can you find out where the TDC mark should go?

Many thanks
Phil

Hope this isn't a stupid answer, but have you looked underneath yet?

Hi Pete,
Yes am aware of where timing marks are - this is more theoretical than anything else. If you had no timing marks how do you find where the tdc mark should go?
Phil

Phil- Theoretically they can go anywhere. On a car engine for example you need to bring the piston to TDC on the compression stroke then make a pointer to attach to the block near to the crank pulley. Then mark the pulley where the pointer meets it. Thats now your TDC reference. Hope this helps, Gary

Gary,
Yes of course - thanks for that, I told you it was probably a stupid question
