MG MGA - Supercharger
Just been drooling at Moss pictures of supercharger installations in the MGA. I have the later 18V engine in my MGA, complete with alternator. Hyperthetical question: Should I eventually get her indoors to give me some pocket money do I go for the Moss MGA installation or the MGB installation? OK, I know there are other makes and suppliers. This is just a query about the differences in the Moss kits. Steve |

Secondary question: Moss UK lists the MGA supercharger at £2495, whereas Moss Motors over the pond list it at £1587 ($3195). Am I missing something, or is it worth getting Moss Motors to ship me one? Even with high shipping costs and VAT it has to be a lot cheaper. Steve |

An opinion, nonetheless... The best value is the early MGB kit (P/N 150-068) that comes with an alternator. If you already have an 18V engine installed, you certainly would not want to go backwards to a generator configuration. The MGA (P/N 150-048) and early chrome bumper MGB (P/N 150-058 units) come with generators. The later MGB unit (P/N 150-078) is designed to be used with the brake booster used on later cars and also does not include an alternator. All of them are exactly the same w.r.t. physical dimensions. The heat shield "accessory" is expensive, but a must for minimizing heat soak and is about the only design that can be fit on the car with the SC in place. So ask for funding to include it as well. Steve, I have an 18V engine in my MGA which has a Moss supercharger on it. The kit I bought was for the 18V MGB with a new alternator. The only required modifcation was a little cutting of the support bracket for the 4" air tube. I will be getting rid of my engine, 5 speed box and supercharger around October time, you never know we may be able to come to some arrangement. The expansion tank will have to go, it is exactly where the pulley end of the blower will be. sorry, have not learned how to post a photo yet. Ted |

Just ordered one for the same set up, and you want the one for 68-74 1/2 MGB (P/N 150-068). The MGA setup is tuned for the smaller engine (carb needle & pulley size), where the MGB kit is tuned for the 1800, and it's already setup for the alternator, making insallation easier. |

We used a 65-67 kit on a 64 3 main motor in an MGA. Fit the newer type water pump to the block and used a Ford LUCAS dynamo which has bearings at both ends. We also gave a little additional spacing to the bodywork by adding a shim between the drivers side (LHD) motor mount and frame. This tilted the motor mount just enough to give space without interference. Now that we just installed the next stage supercharger pulley for aprox. 2 psi more, there is a hair more room in there as well. Can't wait to run it with the new pulley, 5 speed, oil cooler and twin electric fans. I will try to get more pictures and see if i can eventually get them up on our site. -BMC. |
