MG MGA - SU Tuning Tool Kit

In the recent thread on misfiring woes, Les Bennington told us about the SU Tuning Tool Kit he has used for many years.

I have now purchased one of these kits from the MG Owners Club.

If you would like to see what it consists of and read the instructions see here on my website: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/su_carburettor_tool.htm

I will give it a test over the weekend and report back.

Steve, I used this kit for years. You will find it to be very easy to use and the pointers show exactly what is going on with the dashpot pistons as the throttle is opened and closed. The jet centering tool is a must during carburettor rebuilds.

Good Luck,

It is a great tool and one of the few ways to actually see what is happening with the rising pistons dynamically. My only issue with them is they do pick up the engine's vibration making the tips move. Not unreasonably but noticeably.

I found some of that stuff in with my dad's MG parts, and always wondered how it was used. I'll have to check it against your pictures to see if everything is still there, thanks.

Just checked the toolkit out. Very easy and extremely quick to use and check the piston balance. Fascinating watch the rods rise and fall as you blip the throttle.

Dead chuffed that my set-up using the intake suction method was absolutely spot on. The rods moved up and down as if they were welded together. No adjustment needed.

The SU tool kit is worth the money, in my opinion. But a quick check of the carbs can be done by unscrewing the damper caps; leave them loose and open the throttles. The damper caps move up just like the rods from the kit and you know right away if both carbs are working and if they're close to being in sync.

Steve,

I remember reading your article in Practicle Classics with great intrest (when I could get my hands on it) years ago while my MGA was still in a state of disrepair. I think I'll go through my old magazines and re-read it tonight.

Perhaps I'll even pick up one of those handy kits for my SUs.

Steve, I have the SU kit but no instructions. Would you mind scanning them and sending me a copy or point me to a site that has directions for their use.
Thanks

I have emailed you the PDF file containing the instructions.

It is also available through the link in my opening post.

Glad to help.
