MG MGA - su pumps

Hi all , has any one fitted a second su pump in line as a spare so that you could just switch it on and continue your journey , i have two pumps both good but they do some times let you down and always at the wrong time ???

Colin, The fuel pump on my 1600 roadster broke down while touring in the UK some years ago. I have been told that the windings in the "new model" SU fuel pumps fitted to MGA's (marked HP, increased delivery?) are breaking down and the pump then becomes a throw-away. I have, since then, fitted a Fuelflo (originally made in New Zealand?) which I have found to be 100% reliable, the only disadvantage is that it "ticks" continuously (although not audible once the engine fires!). I have heard of Facets being fitted but they are much louder! I think that the logical answer is a new pump!

Hi Colin
To answer your question I have 2 pumps fitted and I have piped them in series. This works very well, as both pumps have an unrestricted route through.

On my midget I also have 2 pumps but they are different pumps (1 is high pressure for max turbo boost and the other is a normal facet pump for non boost operation) so these were piped in parallel. Because they both have non return valves this also does not cause an issue.

So you need to consider which is best and I suppose both parallel and series have differing benefits but both work OK. IMO

The pump used as a backup pump in this set up should be some type of all electronic pump unless you are going switch pumps daily. A points style pump that is not used for long period of time will not work when it is needed due to contact filming, which is burned off when the pump is operating. I use a cheap Facet pump, plumbed in series with the SU pump and a single pole, double throw switch to switch power between pumps as a permanently installed backup. See the article, Backup Fuel Pump in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Cheers - Dave
