MG MGA - stupid question

Hi all I was just thinking has anyone invented an indicator light that would stick magneticaly to the bumper, with its own battery that would pick up wirelessly a signal from the car's indicators, you could stick them on for travelling for safety in today's traffic then peel them off as you arrived at the show.It would save the need to fix additional lights to the 1500 MGA as I have at present I took them off for a while but so many people don't see or know what the single red flashing light means and I've nearly collected a few in the boot so I've put them back on

Not such a stupid question I think. Most car manufacturers are looking at this technology I think. A search on the internet may come up with something. But the device does need to be selective in what signals it picks up, or it could be going off all the time.

Gareth,
Did you make up your own or, if not, where did you buy them? I think I must do the same.

They make lights with magnetic bases for towing vehicles behind other cars. All you would have to do is install a trailer light connector under the back of your MGA to plug them into.

I find most people keep a respectable distance from the old cars. That said, having an 1800 engine, 5 speed gearbox and a 3.9 axle helps me keep most cars off my rear bumper. You could always revert to the old fashioned hand signals that we were forced to use on our driving tests back in the 60s! Why not fit a semaphore arm - that would really confuse them.

Noble idea though, the red flashing light shared with the brakes do appear to cause some confusion with a few drivers. Maybe you should market the kit yourself?

In the USA, flashing red lights that are not turn signals are illegal. Of course emergency flashers are required. Third (center) brakelights are required STD equip on anything built '85 and later. I have designed and built a center brakelight for my 1500 and have it mounted inconspiculously above the licence plate light. It plugs into the rear brakelight harness at the righ rear connection and requires no other wiring. A simple logic circuit and r-c timing lights it contiuously if the brakes are on and not if only the turn signal is on, just like a std brake light. It ties underneath the car on the round frame crossmember with a tie wrap.

I have not seen type available on the market so decided to build one myself.

Gordon,

Just checking on your sanity: is this you?

Chuck, Can we see a picture of your added tail light?

I did as Ed Bell suggested on my 1500 but instead of wiring the trailer connection to the rear wiring harness, I wired it to the turn signal relay under the bonnet. The wires come through the firewall and end with the plug under the dash so it can easily be unplugged when not wanted. When needed, I connect the plug and lay the wires to the lights next to the armrest and stick the lights on the rear cowl so they are more easily seen than being on the bumper.

I purchased an led light from Montgomery Ward and installed it as an additional brake light. Here is a picture of it installed....I hope... have not tried the upload picture yet!

Here is another picture showing the approximate width of the light.

John,I have what looks to be the same third brake light on my MK-II. I bought it from J C Whitney Co. I glued it onto a piece of magnetic plastic material that they make signs out of. I ran the wires from the boot into the cockpit by the top. I can take the light off, and put it on the bulkhead by the top when I don't want it to show.

Bill, Here is a picture of the light...

Here is a pic from the back of the license plate...It mounts to a homemade bracket, attached to the studs of the license plate light.
