MG MGA - Stub Stack Update

Fitted Steves stub Stacks this week to my replacment K&N Filters took me threequarters of an Hour-they just bolted in to the K&Ns I did use carb gaskets between the Stub Stacks and the K&N back plates.
Did a 60 mile run yesterday -part motorway ,fast A roads and my favourite country route. The car seemed more responsive very quick away from junctions, better acceleration especialy in the 3000-4500 rev range, easily hit 90+ mph with more to spare.engine seemed smoother. On my return checked the plugs all looked good with milk chocolate coloured insulaters and plug tip with outer rim of plug darker. Tickover was very steady at 750 rpm. Quick check of fuel consumption looked like around 30 mpg
Pleased with resukt- Thanks again to Steve for facillitating this upgrade

I have a similar set up but with the 123 distributor recently fitted, which has made a big improvement to how flexible the car is.

I'm running the tank down in preparation for replacing the sender gasket, not sure of the exact economy figures however I have driven 300 miles since last filling up with petrol.

Where in Hertfordshire are you Paul, I'm just over the border in Clophill.

I am in Cuffley south Herts near potters Bar incidentally I was near Clophill in beds on Sat during the run in the MG
I also have a 123 which I fitted some 3years and 10000 miles back that made a big improvement
Some two years ago I also fitted a new tank sender unit from Brown & Gammons and after setting the guage correctly as per Barneys site my guage is now pretty accurate ( allowing for the fluctuations of an undamped circuit)
I have kept a fuel consumption record as per Steves spreadsheet download for the last 4 years and 12000 miles and my average over that time has worked out at 29.84 mpg ranging from 23mpg when I was fiddling trying to tune a worn out dizzy to 36 mpg on a 1200 mile tour in France

Paul,

Small world, I purchased my first MGA from a farmers field in Goffs Oak for £50 back in 1972 (782 GTW) and rented a lock up garage in Cuffley to restore it in.

Let me know next time you are out Clophill way and we will make you a cup of tea. (jbrayatwaitrosedotcom)

Hi John

Small world indeed. Is the Stone Jug still going strong there?

I grew up in Ampthill and had several school friends living in Clophill. We occasionally had a beer or two around the village (in moderation of course).

I am just mailing a cheque to Steve, and once I get my stacks fitted will be taking a test run out from North London in that general direction.

regards

Simon

Yes, small world. My parents lived in Cuffley in the 70s and 80s. My brother still lives there.

Cuffley, famed for the first German airship to be shot down on British soil in WW1. The wreckage fell on the land where my parent's house was subsequently built.

Simon,

Stone Jug is still very much there, well it was last Thursday when I called in to check the beer quality. Let me know if you are out this way and we can meet up.

Steve,

There used to be a memorial where the airship came down so it must have been quite close to your parents house. Just down the road from here are the two airship hangers at Cardington which are quite a sight, but sadly
currently used for film work.

Apologies to those who were hoping to read about stub-stacks we seem to have high-jacked the thread, especially as airships used air-cooled Porsche engines.

As the crow flies about 50 metres max.

I used to live on the small estate (Cranfield Crescent)in Cuffley behind the Plough PH incidentaly where the German bodies were placed before being moved to Potters Bar. On Digging my Garden there some 40 years ago one occasionally unearthed a piece of unrecognisable metal
The memorialis on East Ridgeway as Steve points out is 50 metres as the Crow Flies from the area where tge wreckage landed. There is also a model of the Shutt Lanz airship in the Cuffley Hall together with some paintings

I think we have had this conversation before. My parents lived in Cranfield Crescent from 1972.
