MG MGA - steering wheel wrap

Hi,

Untill a few months ago there was someone in the UK selling leather steering wheel wraps. But he seems to be disappeared.(or I can not find him anymore)
Is there someone of you who has is email address please.
Thanks,
Herman

You need to check out "Mr Steering" on ebay.

My friend Lindsay Sandford models leather products from Mr Steering on ebay. ( well, to be strictly accurate, his MGA models the steering wheel glove you mean! )
It looks ok and if my car didnt have a moto-lita steering wheel, I would probably fit one to my car.

Just checked, if you go into ebay and search for "mga steering wheel cover" in the "vehicle parts and accessories" section you should find it.

I fitted one to a friends Morris Minor and it really does look great. It also has a nice feel when driving. When I get round to it I will probably fit one to all my classics.

Herman, if you type "FITS MG MGA ITALIAN BLACK LEATHER STEERING WHEEL COVER" into an eBay search it will get you right to it. I am still pleased with mine. And before Colyn says it, I am not on Mr Steering's payrol!
Lindsay Sampford

Sorry Lindsay, just couldnt help poking a bit of fun in your direction. :-)

Thanks chaps. That's one Xmas present to self sorted!!

I wrapped my wheel with a couple of layers of bicycle handlebar tape before putting the leather cover on. I liked the increased diameter and the bit of padding it offered. Use black tape and it won't show.

I put an MGA one on my series 2 Land Rover. Took about 25 minutes. Magic not to have sticky fingers on a cold wet day from the deteriorating wheel.

I have a motolita Steering wheel with padded leather rim. I like it a LOT for the improved grip, but it has one little problem. When it gets wet the surface seems to deteriorate leaving wet black powder on my hands, a bit of a bother when anything I touch is similarly contaminated. I sometimes use a rag to keep wiping it dry, but it's a bit of a hassle, almost makes me want to put the top up when it rains (almost).

I just thought of a really versatile alternative to the leather steering wheel cover that will fit any car you drive.

Just buy a nice pair of leather gloves!
Colyn Firth

Very pragmatic Colyn!

My friend has a Daimler 2.5 and habitually each time before driving, puts on his gloves, which he refers to as "fitting the power steering".
N McGurk

Colyn, you're just jealous 'cos you can't fit one to YOUR steering wheel!

Shane, I know just what you mean about the decomposing Land Rover steering wheel. I've a Series III with the same trouble; particularly nasty when the weather is damp and cold! Now I know the MGA glove fits, I must just do the same, thanks.

Hi
How about this one?
Found this NOS wrap (AVUS by Kamei, Porotherm) by accident. Hesitated first to mount it because of the bright red colour - got used to it by now and love it!

Looks like you are just about to do some 'Alpine Meadow' driving Andre! The glove looks very '60s.
Lindsay Sampford

Yeah, just about!
That what it looks like in my part of my country.

Andre, now that looks like the perfect MGA situation, a quiet country road with winding bends, no traffic, a sunny day and beautiful scenery.

Switzerland is definitely first on my list of destinations for my retirement tour of europe in a year or two.

Hi André

Where are you ?

Dominic

That's nearly flat for Switzerland isn't it Andre? Looks beautiful and the glove matches the paint!
Lindsay Sampford

Lindsay - I too thought it looked a bit flat - not unlike parts of Lancashire to be honest (apart from the sunflowers).
Andre - my car is a RHD and kph speedo - originally exported to Switzerland but the opposite colours ( black with red interior ). It has a steering lock which I believe was mandatory in Switzerland in 1960 - and I have a black leather wrap from Mr.Steering on the original steering wheel although I use the Motolita at the moment.

Hi
Thank you for your comments.
We do have mountains of course! But the eastern part of Switzerland between the Lake of Zürich and the Lake of Konstanz is just as nice as the alpine region.
Less traffic, nice little roads through meadows and appleyards. Lots of cows and horses.
(By the way: the steering lock was built in for Germany and Sweden as far as I know).

Cam, RHD and kph would have been Sweden, as they didn't "switched sides" until 1967!
N McGurk

Interesting info Andre and Neil - my heritage cert is wrong then as it mentions Switzerland - but Sweden is logical being still RHD in 1960 - it would also explain why I can't find any history for my car in Switzerland. Anyone got any MG contacts in Sweden?

Steering lock:
Have a look at
http://mgaguru.com/mgtech
for the steering lock (just search for steering lock in the tech part).
What kind of license plate light does your car have?
For Switzerland it would have been a special edition
(also see in the mgaguru site). Pics?

Andre - my car made its way back to UK via Holland and no longer has its original licence plate lamp ( I have put a standard Lucas one on recently). The steering lock is not combined with the ignition as shown on Barney's site.

sorry I thought you meant one of these

Brilliant Gordon - must put it on my Xmas list!!

The Sweden and Germany factory steering lock is here:

Cam, -- You have a steering lock that is mechanical but not electrical? Would like to see pictures (someday when its convenient, maybe).
Barney Gaylord

Hi Barney - I have just taken 3 photos - will post one here and send the others to you - cheers Cam
