MG MGA - starter pinion cover

Just noticed, while ready to install the motor, that the starter pinion is not covered. Can't find a part in Moss catalogue, so I guess I will fab one from some 2" tubing and flat plate I have.

Don't think it ever had one fitted although I think the screw threads are there. I think one of a 1275 midget would come very close to a straigh fit.

This was discussed a while ago. Some cars were fitted with the cover. Some guys said they were a nuisance because they rattle against the wooden toe board.

Some early 1500 cars had this part. I had one on a car I drove in 1968-1969. There were two different designs, either flat end (welded) or dome (deep drawn). It is a bit of a pain (gets in the way) when R&R the engine and/or gearbox. The intention is obviously to keep fingers and/or gravel out of the starter pinion works.

I'm pretty sure the part was "deleted" sometime before end of the low starter 1500 (January 1959), maybe a lot earlier, and not used on any later cars. It does not seem to appear in the Workshop Manual or in the Service Parts List. After the first fuss with mine in 1969 I left it off with no problem. My current MGA (August 1957 issue) had 150K miles in 1977 with no starter pinion cover when I bought it. The car now has 383,000 miles including LOTS of gravel roads, still no starter pinion cover, and never any problem.

I highly recommend leaving it off as a matter of convenience, and expect no problems ever.

OK, another job deleted! Thanks
