MG MGA - Speedo repair

My speedo stopped functioning on my run this past weekend. I found the problem. Where the cable attaches to the back of the speedo, the square drive rounded out the socket in the speedo. Has anyone repaired this before, and how did you do it?

Everything is turning freely and it is well lubricated at the back of the speedo. I just want to get the socket square again. Or am I missing a part.

Thanks

Well , I , thought I found the problem, but ..... Speedo is fine... Cable is fine... I have a sneaky suspicion that the fault lays with the angle drive to the 5 - speed trans. Its either the drive or the gear in the gearbox. Everything is really tight for space under the tunnel, so Its going to take some work to remove the t9 angle drive.

Has anyone had failures of the Speedograph - Richfield drives?

You probably have all ready checked but the length of the speedo cable can sometimes be the problem.

I had two problems with the right angle drive where the cable parted company with its gear wheel inside the unit. Replaced without quibble

Don, Seems the cable fits. I can feel it drop into the drive. My next trick is to remove the drive, and take a look.

Dom; I hope Richfield will stand by their product.

I have found the problem, and it is the correction right angle drive off the transmission. Seems the stub of speedo cable installed in the drive spun out and separated from the unit. I have sent it back to Speedograph-Richfield for repair.

What a #&*/#! to get out of the car after everything is assembled!

That is exactly the same fault I experienced twice. It is impossible to get back in assembled, so I made an inspection hatch in the side of the tunnel to make access really easy.

Dom; I had "relieved the tunnel in that area on installation of the tunnel. It is still "tight", so I loosened the transmission mount on the T9 transmission and had enough lateral movement to get the drive out, and I hope I will get it in the same way. It is easy to align the drive shaft and transmission afterward.

I just hope I do not have to do it twice. S-R has the defective part now and I hope they repair it to last.
