MG MGA - speaker mounting, part deux

(I tried reactivating the old thread about this, but it didn't want to show up...? Sorry if this now shows up twice!)

I had my speakers on a panel that filled the spare tire hole. With the new top and tonneau, you could still hear them, but they became somewhat muffled.

Here is the alternate plan. I made the "boxes" out of a 1" and a 3/4" PVC board glued together and then cut out on the band saw and a hole drilled for the speaker. Speaker is a Panasonic 3" dual cone - sadly they didn't come with grills, so I'll have to find those.

This works out great, and is unobtrusive, and clean. It also leaves the door pockets free.

In my opinion radios and sound systems in an MGA roadster or coupe are as useless as "an ash tray on a motorbike", "a ass pocket in a singlet", etc.
Better solution is to install a 12v outlet and use an iPod type device with earphones. I am planning on taking this a step further giving my navigator my Sony noise cancelling earphones for long trips!

Beware that wearing dual ear covers is illegal in some places, like all of California, possible Illinois, and I dunno where else. If you get tapped for that it is a moving traffic violation subject to points against your drivers license. I believe the idea is to keep at least one ear open so you can hear approaching emergency vehicles and car horns.

Barney, I was meaning more for keeping the passenger happy, if the driver is not content listening to the exhaust burble then he can use a single ear piece to keep track of the footy score (footy=AFL football)!

Looks a neat installation. Mine is not dissimilar although slightly further forward and higher; barely visible. Unlike Mike, I don't have any problem hearing the radio at speed (no hood nor sidescreens); I just have the volume turned well up. It has the advantage of drowning the tappets etc. Mind you, when I come to a stop I find I am totally drowned out with the noise. To others I must sound like one of those boy racer types who have massive amplifiers and speakers in the trunk!

I enjoyed this thread. When I was a kid we had a long extension from our radiogram in the dining room into the kitchen to a sort of bird-box type speaker so Mam good listen to the Billy Cotton band show when doin the dinner on Sundays. When I got my A they had gone upmarket so I swiped said bird box (about 5" square) and shoved it under the drivers seat connecting to the radio. It worked but quite honestly it being an MG I preferred to listen to the engine and all the other noisy bits awaiting the inevitable breakdown.
