MG MGA - Something different - MGA Adversaries

Great night at the MGCC Victoria Clubrooms on 18 Nov. "MGA Adversaries" on display (by lucky MGA owners who own both).

What a great idea, Mike. I would be more than happy to have any of those in my garage!

In terms of adversaries of course the Frogeye Sprite was in a class below, but one could argue that the MGA was the successor to the TF midget, until the Midget was introduced in 1961. The TR was a broad rival for the MGA, but I always thought a bit more blokey and not quite as refined. The Porsche 356 was an adversary but way more expensive in the day, and in terms of current values has taken off. Back in the '70s I can remember them being advertised for similar money.

These cars were launched into a very different world - Autobahns were yet to be built in UK, there wasn't much dual-carriageway either and 60mph was fast. In this world, The MGA had one main competitor - Triumph - the TR had more power and was faster, the MGA had better handling and was easier to keep on the road. It was also much more eye-catching - Porsche numbers were tiny, there was no infrastructure backup to speak of while every garage in the country had a mechanic who could keep the British cars running. Its country of origin did not convey the cachet that Porsche has now. Its looks (and price)were advanced and these worked against it.
A lot of effort went into developing Triumph sports cars but they never had the same following as MG. We have the USAF to thank - they took their TCs home at the end of the war - every man a hero and trend-setter. The MGA was a wow. Beside the XK120 series there wasn't a better looking design that hadn't come from Italy !

But that was then !

I remember that meeting room well. Standing up in front of you all with my presentation. It must rank as one of the best MG club facilities in the world.

What a great idea to have a get together like that.
