MG MGA - Seat belts

I want to install the lap and shoulder seat belt type, and I'm at the poit where I should install the anchor points. Is the Moss standard belt this type? Can't see from their catalogue, although they do sell shoulder pads.

Before you paint the car, you should get the seat belt anchor kit from Todd Clarke. The shoulder anchors must be welded under the rear deck.

I have designed and lab tested an upper seat belt bracket which mounts on three wing bolt fixing points. This brings the mounting up high like the Mk2 mounting but does not require any body modification. The lower mountings can be standard ISO /FIA eg eBay no. 350509494834, through the floor and side of the transmission tunnel. If you want the details of the upper bracket I can send them by email.

You had gone quiet on that upper point bracket. My fixing is lower and I am always having to pull the diagonal back over my shoulder - almost an automatic action now, similar to constantly touching the gear stick to check what gear I am in! Do you have supplies? What cost?

I did email you a while ago offering a pair of brackets but I didn't get a reply so sold them to someone else. I don't think I have any untested ones spare, i.e not bent. If there was some demand I could get some more made. The cost would be around £70 per pair max.

When you say tested has the mounting position been tested?

The bracket has not been tested in the car but has been tested in the lab against a solid bracket bolted to the bracket with the three bolts, see picture. This tests the strength of the bolts which are potentially a weak link as well as the bracket In the car the body will deform as well which absorb some of the energy during plastic deformation. So it will reduce the stresses in the bracket. The plastic deformation aborbs a lot of energy and is acceptable in the International automotive specifications for in car testing.

The body washers should be large enough to spread the load over the body tub. If you look at the FIA backing brackets the three wing washers have a larger area than a single FIA bracket but they need to be 3mm thick.

I did this work with a University engineering lab and academic and am satisfied it is up to the job.

The only reason I ask is that I made my own seat belts and mounts using items from scrapyards with inertia belts. The 2 bottom fixings are no problem but the one for the shoulder has an intermediate guide that relies on body panels similar to yours and it is always a worry to me that this is a wek feature however you have confirmed that it would indeed be fine. Thanks.

If you use Todd Clarke's mounting kit make sure you locate the frame anchorage bracket an extra 2" to the rear so it doesn't contact the seat back. The dimension shown in Todd's instructions is that used by the factory for the Mk 11 seat belt option and will result in the bracket damaging the seat back.

Hi John, is it possible to forward the drawings of the bracket together with the fixing instructions/fixing diamentions as I would prefer your bracket to the original type which requires welding in way of the underneath of the "turtle back"
