MG MGA - Seat belt anchorage...

My car is fitted with static belts, the short belts being bolted to the tunnel. Opinion is that this is unsatisfactory due to the tunnel mounting point not being strong enough in a heavy shunt. Does anyone know of a simple solution?

Mounting to the tunnel is what the factory would have done for MK IIs and is what is shown in the workshop manual, Section S 21. It’s also what Todd Clarke recommends with the kit he sells which is supposed to be just like what the factory supplied.

Well, you could always fabricate a strong L shaped bracket that could be fixed to the floor (underneath the car) and which will take in the position of the tunnel mounting.

If you made a mock up, you could take it to an engineering shop and they would fabricate the brackets out of heavy guage steel - get them powder coated and problem solved. You could then be hit by a train (hopefully not...) and the fixing would remain stable...

Its worth the 50 or so for the brackets even if all they do is put your mind at rest....

Your solution would depend on where you are with the car. If the body is off there is a very recent thread on the MGExperience forum with details of what you can do to make a solid anchorage on the chassis.

If the body is on and trimmed out you can go with Jim’s suggestion which is the factory solution. However, if the tunnel fixings are missing or damaged or rusted out the factory solution is not for you.

Hi John, What is the source of the information regarding the tunnel not being suitable as a seat belt mount? I've followed the factory instructions as well as those supplied by seat belt suppliers and used the tunnel, I'm now concerned about the safety of this mounting point.
