MG MGA - Rust with some Car attached

Back in Nov '07 I purchased 10242. What I actually got was a lot of rust with some car attached to it. I just received back from Heratige Motor Centre the build info. Built Oct. 1955 and titled 1956. Just like me. I'm 51 born 3 weeks late in July 1956. You can do the math. I've had many British cars (A-H, E Types, other MGs) but this is my first A. I've gotten it down to the frame and will post up pictures as we go along. This is an early car and does have some of the early fetures. Such as early bonnet bracing, trans tunnel cover is welded close, early gages..... The original engine and box are not the ones in the car. So I'll need to decide along the way wether to use the 1600 that came in the car or put a 1500 and box in it. Thoughts are welcome. The frame is completely bare and will start the metal work this week as soon as my mig arrives and I get the 220v line run to the garage.

wrong gages in the dash. I found NOS on ebay last month.

You can see the rear extensions of what remains of a roll bar that had been inatalled. Car must have been raced at some point. There are fortunately no signs of a shunt in the body or frame.

GD Glenn

Rough but the engine turns freely by hand.

GD Glenn

Argh

GD Glenn

Where the roll bar came through the body has been cut off and a patch bondoed in. I've had to cut the bar out with a torch to get the body off.

GD Glenn

Familiar territory? By the way can I upload more than one picture at a time?

Garland,

Looks like you will be busy. What colour was the car? (and will it be?)

You can paste multiple pictures onto a powerpoint slide, but you lose image quality.

Congratulations on the car. What do you plan to do about the part behind the grill?

When I need to post more than one picture, I just post the pictures to ImageShack http://imageshack.us/ and put the links in my message.

Luckily most of the body panels are available. Good luck!

A quote form an old MGA parts catalog. Oh no, my MG isnt seriously rusted. There's just a bit of surface rust around the big holes in the frame! Glenn

Glenn - it will be good to see how you progress to getting it back on the road - good luck - Cam

The car was originally Red/Black. That's what I'll take it back to.

There's plenty of rust around the big holes in the frame but it hasn't gone "thru" as bad as I expected.

Fortuately it's straight and all of the sheet metal is availible. One thing I will have to do is make a new "channel" around the lower part of the boot opening.

Other than the part behind the grill, a lot of it doesn't look too bad. Check out what this guy started out with:

Of course, if you really want to go crazy, this guy did very sound work, but this might not be what you're shooting for:

I'm having a whole lot of trouble opening all of the
posted images from Glenn showing his 1955-56 MGA. Please help me anyone to view his postings. Sincerely, Tom Peotter

Garland,
Unless you want a show car I would use what you have as far as the drive train goes. The rest of the car does not look that bad at all. A little TLC and some time and you will be pleasantly supprised at what a fun car this is. It is definately worth the effort. Have a good day!
