MG MGA - RHD to LHD conversion MGA 1500

Hi MG Enthusiasts,

I would like to convert my MGA 1500 from Right hand to Left hand. Where can I get the necessary parts?
If someone did the opposite conversion and has the required parts please contact.
Is this a serious job? Of course I can imagine theoretical the amount of work, but are there problems to be expected?

Thank you for each kind of help.

Hallo Patrick

The LHD parts are relatively easy to find, and are quite cheap.

The RHD parts are VERY hard to find and are VERY expensive.

So if you put your RHD parts up for sale, you will easily fund the purchase of your LHD parts.

I suggest that you contact Bob West as he very probably has all the LHD parts from cars he is breaking, or even Paul Chamberlain, who I think also visits this board.

For shipping from you to from the UK, don't ask the supplier to arrange shipping, use www.shiply.co.uk to get offers from shipping companies to pick the parts up and bring the parts to you - as an example I have had quotes to send an engine and gearbox from UK to Switzerland for 80 GBP and 800 GBP..... it's an easy choice!

There are also many LHD parts in Australia from ex USA cars converted to RHD here. The freight would be much greater than from the UK.
If you have no luck with UK suppliers put another message on this BBS.
It is a fairly straight forward conversion, but you need to know all the parts required, not just the obvious steering rack and dashboard. There are items such as the throttle pedal assembly, windscren wiper arms, cables for the tacho and speedo etc....etc.
Your starting point should be to make up a list of the items required. This is done easily from the factory Service Parts List. If you do not have one it can be purchased or downloaded from Dominic's or Barney's websites.

Mick, the list from MGA Guru ist very helpfull, thanks.

I would like to get my car converted first before I start to sell my parts. Only to make sure that I dont end up with a car nor LHD nor RHD :-)

Thanks
Patrick

Left hand parts are cheap just buy them. Hold on to the RHD parts it may make the car much more valuable if you save them. An OE RHD car is worth more than a converted LHD one. Those are parts to treasure like gold.

Good choice of racks on Ebay at the moment - an LHD at £45, an RHD at £500 and a Paul Chamberlain RHD for £1000! Mike
