MG MGA - Replacing gearbox front oil seal

Once removed the engine I noticed a small oil leak in the base of the front housing gearbox, somebody can tell me how easy or difficult is to replace the front oil seal?
R Garcia

Very easy since the engine is already out. Just remove the gearbox front cover and replace the seal.

Can you be sure if it is the seal or the gasket?
You need to replace both anyway. A simple job.
Centralising the seal is very important, and wipe the lip of the seal with oil during assembly.

Mike, Mark,
Thank you, very explicit!
R Garcia

Except that some MGA had no oil seal in that location.

Also there is more flexibility in the spring lip of an oil seal than there is radial float in the front cover. Logic implies that it can just as well be assembled without using the centralizer tool. I suppose it might help if you were trying to re-use an old seal that was very stiff, but you can draw your own conclusions on that idea. Truth be known, I have reassembled gearboxes dozens of times, never used the centralizer tool, and do not have any problems with the rubber seals leaking.
