MG MGA - replacement parts

Has anyone had any experience with the parts sold on E-bay by 'angelheartpancho aka Jorge Cervera. He claims better quality and fit than most suppliers.

Jorge's parts are very high quality, he seems to have a good reputation. I recently purchased a gas tank from him. I measured it and compared to my original tank, it was within 1/16 inch, and well made.

I bought a new grille from Jorge this past summer. It was expensive, but very good quality. My only complaint is that he REALLY dinged me on shipping, charging 178% of the actual shipping cost.

I purchased the rear section of the transmission tunnel and had to cut and re-weld to fit. The angle was wrong to fit up to the rear pylwood panel.

I will quote Ken Caya in regards to the rear gearbox tunnel. The angles were wrong and the front section had been cut and bent incorrectly. Required a few hours of reworking it. I cannot speak for his other parts and understand when small production items aren't prefect.

Ken and Brian, it isthe rear transmission tunnel that I am thinking about. Was the modification fairly simple? I have a cut-off grinder and a MIG welding unit. Did either of you take pictures of the process?

Thanks

I purchased the front valance and radiator duct. Both were well made & heavy guage metal was used. He shipped the day after I paid for my order via mail which was not at all expensive. The parts were effectively and well wrapped and no damage occured in shipping.
Both items were listed on ebay, I didn't buy off ebay but purchased directly from him.
Both items were listed "on sale" and were substantialy less than Moss or Octagon in Vancouver.
I don't know about the fit as I am in the last stage of stripping the shell of the body and am collecting all the body parts that need replacing. Sill repalcment starts about Oct 20.

I purchased an MGA grille from Jorge two years ago. It was an easy transaction and the grille was excellent quality.

I bought the rear transmission tunnel section. It did not fit. It appears that it was made to sit on top of the floor boards rather than under them, as original. The height is about 3/8" shorter than a stock unit, compared side-by-side. I never used it and would be glad to sell it to someone who wants to play with it. It is heavier gauge than the original and well-made. It just doesn't fit properly.

I also bought the grille from Jorge and had the opportunity to do a side by side comparison with the Moss grille. The difference in quality between the two is obvious. Jorge's grille is far superior in qualtiy of construction than the Moss gille. It weighs more. The top fasteners that hold the vane assembly are not the tack-welded posts that are commonly out of position on the repros. He welds a bracket with a slot to the inside of the grille shell so the vane assembly is held at the top with a stainless carriage bolt, similar to the one that goes in from the front to hold the bottom of the vane assembly. All the hardware is polished stainless.

Very nice.

I will also say this; I had a minor issue with the grille I got from him, that being that the hole for the motif was drilled at an angle. The grille does not come with a motif; I ordered one from Moss and it is quite nice but is not the same as the one that comes on their repro grille. The shaft is shorter and is a 10-28, not the longer metric shaft. Rather than gouging it out straight I contacted him to ask what to do. He had me send the grille back, with the new motif. He called last week to say that he is sending a new grille with my motif fitted. He has more than gone out of his way to make sure I was satisfied with the product.

I too got the SHAFT ON SHIPPING! I purchased a rear trans tunnel and paid about $30 in S&H to Denver. I asked for an explanation but never got one.

As far as the part - it fit.

I'd be sure to ask him for a S&H quote before bidding!

Regarding shipping, I haven't purchased from Jorge, but I do know that all shipping companies are now adding a lot of money for fuel so it may be legit. Also, if Jorge packs the item well, it may well be worth the extra for the packaging. I got a radiator shipped to me that wasn't packed well and I have to repair the filler neck.

I paid $35 shipping for a Grill to NC. The acutal cost was about $20. YES, it was high but anybody that deals on ebay knows that shipping charges sometimes makes the profit on the sale. ASK before you bid!!!

"Price low and add it to the shipping", is the thinking.

I know from my ebay sales, the actual postage is just part of the cost. The box, packing material, time to pack and take for shipping, etc. all work into the charge. Don't be to hard on Jorge.
Jim Ferguson

I was charged $45 shipping. Postage on the box was $25. When I asked about the over-charge, I was told it was to cover the overhead of maintaining his factory in Mexico, etc. My argument was, and still is...These are fixed costs of doing business and as such they should be included in the price of the product, not hidden in "extra" shipping costs.

I have no problem with paying for shipping, but advertising an item at $350 and actually charging $370 is FALSE ADVERTISING in my mind. Jim, you may be prepared to accept that, but I am not. I let Jorge know that even though I was pleased with the quality of the part, I was not happy with being purposely over-charged on shipping and that I intended to warn others.
Andy Bounsall

Andy,

I don't know the specifics of your purchase in terms of what the "advertising" disclosed, but most companies do add charges for shipping and handling, and this generally indicated in the advertising. If Jorge's ad indicated that S&H were extra, then it is not false advertising - it is another case of "buyer beware".

My two cents (plus S&H).

I purchased a battery cover panel from Jorge. He was pleasant and easy to deal with. The panel was good quality, but it did not fit properly out of the box - it required some bending of the rear flange to fit.

As someone who ships merchandise of various sizes on occasion for a non-profit I can say that the Shipping and Handling costs are NOT JUST the shipping cost. Packing boxes and materials are not inexpensive and can, in some cases, cost more than the actual shipping cost. It all depends on the size, weight, and fragility of what is being shipped.

Joe, Larry, I understand about shipping and handling. I ship a lot of stuff myself. As I stated, I am not opposed to paying for shipping nor a modest amount for handling, packaging, or what have you. That is why I asked what the extra charge was for. As I stated, I was told that the extra charge was to cover overhead costs such as maintaining his factory in Mexico. That is not a shipping nor a handling cost. That is part of the fixed cost of doing business and should be included in the advertised price of the item.

Would I have paid $20 more for the part anyway? Yes, I probably would have, but that's not the point. The point is that if his costs necessitate charging $20 more for the part, then just advertise the price as being $20 more.

BTW, the part arrived in a previously used box, packed with the previous days newspaper. Neither of these justifies the additional $20 charge.

I just fitted a new rad from Moss. This was part of a new engine install. At the end I had to make adjustments to the top tank to be able to close the bonnet - it is about 1/3 inch too tall at the corners, and the bonnet was pivoting on these and refused to close. The mounting holes at the bottom are in the wrong place too. With tender application of the universal screwdriver to the top tank, I could close the bonnet.

Quality like this is a joke.

Dominc,

Back in 1999, when I bought my "A", a new rad from Moss was the very first item I installed, as the car was seriously overheating. It fit perfectly (and yes, it does its job very well - I now run at a constant 190 deg.) I wonder if they changed suppliers?
