MG MGA - Removing the speedo

On a MKII 1959 MGA, can you please tell me if the speedo fixing to the dash will need any tools, or is it the same bracket plus knurled nut as on the MGB? I am going to help someone out with re-calibrating the speedo after fitting a Hi-Gear conversion and do not want to arrive without if I need some. I am sure a lead light would be good thing to have with you .I am expecting the usual flexibilty workout while doing this job.

Hi Stan

It's the knurled nuts and bracket behind the dash. About a 2 minute job to remove. If you are old and knackered like me you will end up on your back in the footwell under the steering wheel with feet stuck up in the air. One and a half minutes of the job is getting into that position! Dead hedgehogs come to mind.

Thanks Steve, as a fully paid up pessimist I will take a few spaners and a small mole grip anyway, just in case the knurled nuts went walkabout in a previous "restoration". I hope the car is an unmolested behind the dash as it is elsewhere.

Word of warning, lots of wires behind there. Worth disconnecting/isolating the battery to avoid shorts.

allow about 10 mins to get up from that position and about another 10 mins for the blood to start flowing again properly

Yes, the car has just had a Peter Burgess Econotune head as well as the 5 speed so setting it on fire in front of the owner would be a bit of an anti climax!

Stan,
As a certified member of the old MG farts USA division, I can attest to every thing Steve and Gordon say. When I extracted my speedo about a month ago, I reached up behind the dash to joyfully find knurled nuts. Unfortunately, the nuts and studs were both knackered and corroded. So down on my backside I went with pliers in hand. The speedo came out after about a half hour of slow turns with pliers. Hope you have bette luck!

Ok can of 3 in 1 penetrating oil added to the travelling tool kit. Thanks for the advice.

Well, all done speedo out and measurements taken. Because I took the full tool kit and some penetrating oil I was greeted with the welcome sight of knurled nuts, both of which span off with finger pressure. Thanks to everyone who advised me.
