MG MGA - Reinstalling gearbox mounting bolt

I have the gearbox mounting bolt halfway in - up to the side where it is supposed to come out. I can't get it to pop through the other side though. I've been trying to jack the transmission up and down (at one point, the bolt gets loose enough to turn but not to push through).

Any ideas for how to get it all the way through?

Hi Rob. Remove the tranny mounting bolt, and screw on the nut as far as it will go. Then, grind a slight chamfer around the circumference on the threaded end of the bolt. When you reinstall the bolt, the chamfer should help align the bolt with the hole. Also, instead of jacking the tranny up or down, try wiggling the tranny (or engine) from side to side. Heres the bind: If the bolt goes through the first "ear" of the tranny mount, and through the bushing, it then has to go through the other "ear" on the chassis. Even a tiny bit of misalignment will keep the bolt from sliding home. You might want to lubricate the bolt shaft with some slickup (motor oil, WD 40, grease, butter, olive oil, or hair tonic) This should assist in driving the bolt home. Cheers! GLenn

Rob;; DO NOT USE olive oil. Tht's for an Italian car only. You should use drainings from true fish and chips only.If it don't work eat the fish etc and enjoy a cool one.

Hi Sandy. I take great EXCEPTION to your comment that olive oil is ONLY for Italian cars, and that ONLY drainings from (British) Fish and Chips can be used! As you know, Olive Oyl is Popeye's girlfrind, and is reportedly seen in lots of cars, and not just Italian ones!!!! As you also well know, all (British) fish and chip drainings end up either in the food, or in the (London Times) newspaper they are wrapped in!!!! Therefore, there are NO fish and chip drainings available to slather on wayward MGA transmission mount bolts! You should be thoroughly ashamed for steering poor Rob in the WRONG direction. 8-)~ Wake up and smell the cyanide, er fish and chips Sandy!!!!! lol GLenn

LOL, it turns out the answer lay completely elsewhere. I brought the significant other in and had her rock the engine back and forth while I shoved the bolt in. Three tries and whammo! Right through.

For what it's worth, she's part Italian, so it looks like Sandy may have been on the right track.
