MG MGA - Rear Axle Breather

Hello all,

On my race car I have found that the oil in the rear axle leaks out of the breather when cornering hard. It makes a mess of everything behind the rear axle. It still has the plastic fitting, but I am looking for a way to run a coil of tubing or ? to keep it vented but not allow it to leak when all of the oil is in that end of the banjo housing. Any ideas?

I think the hole in the axle is tapped 5/16-24 or maybe 3/8-24. If you unscrew the whole plastic thingy, you can screw a suitable bolt into the hole to check the above.
THEN, you could make the bolt into a hose adapter by turning donw one end to match the ID of a suitable hose and drilling a hole (maybe 1/8 to 3/16 inch) down the centre of the bolt. The hose could be routed up to the underside of the body.
Also, make sure the axle isn't over-filled. I've not seen a case of oil sloshing out of the breath tube, before.
Hope this works! Fraser

John,
I built an aluminum box for the left side battery box and ran vinyl vent hoses from the breathers on the gearbox and the rear end to quart oil containers inside the box. works well- no slosh on downhill 2nd gear left turns. My breather fittings were metal so I just ground off the top part and put the hoses on with clamps. The hoses are not under the fluid level in the containers so it breathes ok.
