MG MGA - Radiator fan

I have seen on previous threads that the fan could be on the wrong way round, and, therefore, not do the job properly.
However, I can't find a description of how to tell if it is the right way or not.
Any ideas please?

In this E-bay listing the fan in the top picture shows the engine side. The picture below on the right shown the radiator or front side of the fan. If you would like a picture on the engine show E-mail address.

the easy way is to take a small napkin or paper towel and place it in front of the radiator and see if the fan pulls it towards the radiator. If it blows rather than sucks, you have it on backwards,

Putting the radiator fan on backwards won't make it push air back through the radiator. The blade is still turning in the same direction and will still be pulling air, just less of it.

An MGA fan will draw the air through the radiator whichever way you bolt it on. The only real difference is whether the face of the blade that cuts through the air is clean (correct) or is obstructed by the blade arms (incorrect).

In simple terms the smooth side of the blade should be towards the engine and the blade attachment arm should be on the radiator side of the blade.

Thanks to you all. It is the wrong way round so needs to be changed asap. Is it just a matter of undoing the 4 bolts, and reversing it?

Nigel

Yes.

The easiest way to position fan blades is to put the cupped portion of the blade towards the engine.

Depends on whether you are in the Southern or Northern Hemisphere! ;-)

Rich,

Hemispheric location could be a factor like other things such as toilets flushing clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere--they do, don't they? ;o)

In england Hurricanes turn clockwise from the winds created by people driving on the wrong side of the road.
Steve Meline

I think they just throw in a handful of earth in the Southern Hemisphere....

Thanks for that tip on the blades. Ive never worried about mine - I just made sure they were positioned as in the various drawings and so forth.
