MG MGA - Quarterlight hinge replacement

The quarterlight hinge on the drivers side (RHS) of my 61 Coupe had sheared some years ago and the previous owner had done a patch job repair. I've also needed to repair it recently with some JBWeld. It is probably only a temporary fix so I've bought from Ebay a new replacement hinge that comes with the semi-tubular rivets. My question is whether I need to take out the window to undertake this replacement hinge job or whether I can do it with the window in situ? Anyone had to do this before please who can provide some tips? Thanks.

I have not done this repair but it seems you have to partially remove the window seal to get access to remove the rivets. If the seal is reasonably new you may be lucky and it will survive the flexing necessary. If it’s old and perished it probably won’t survive in which case you will have to remove the door card to access and remove the 1/4” nut and spring on the quarter light pivot so you can pull it up and out.

Nothing lost if you try flexing the seal and see what happens.

I am amazed that you managed to buy a replacement hinge, was it NOS or aftermarket?

Interested to know how you make out with the repair

Thanks Dave. Peeling back the seal looks as it is is do-able to reveal the rivets so that they can be drilled out. The hinges are re-manufactured and on ebay just now. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/313559977286?hash=item4901a18d46:g:xtYAAOSwhfNd2nLv

Tim,
Yes, you have to remove the glass and the rubber glazing to replace the quarter light hinge. You should use stainless steel semi tubular rivets and polish the heads before installation. To polish them, put the shank in a drill and polish the heads on a Scotchbrite pad.

Here’s a picture of one of mine after reassembly.

I just saw this on the TwinCam email Group and I thought it may be worth exploring for anyone on this thread who is looking to fix their quarterlights.

Thanks Jim & Colyn. Colyn - David James is the chap who has re-manufactured these hinges. Seems to specialise in these window parts for midgets, MGB and MGA

Hi Tim

How did you make out with the repair? What did you actually have to do?

Dave. I haven't attempted the repair yet. The JBWeld is holding the hinge okay meantime and I'll need to summon up the enthusiasm for removal of the glass etc to replace the hinge properly. I think it will be a winter month project. Have you a similar issue?

Hi Tim

No, I have not had a similar problem. It’s just my curiosity and sharing of knowledge in the small world of Coupes.
