MG MGA - Pulley removal
Is it possible to remove/replace the crankshaft pulley with the engine in the car? |

If it's a "must do" job, then try that way first. Nothing to lose. You may have to remove the rad and jack up the front mounts to get wrench access to the bolt. |

Short answer is Yes. As Art says; first remove the rad. |

I haven't done it on my MGA but I did on my frogeye. As the guys mentioned you need to remove the radiator, and on the frog, I had to loosen the engine mounts, to jack the engine up a little to get sufficient access clearance. My problem was removing the nut holding it in place. I did all the usual things like, leave car in gear, etc., all to no avail. After several wasted hours I went out and bought an electric impact wrench from Machine Mart for about £50. It removed it in about 2 seconds, the best £50 I ever spent! - I mention it just in case Good luck, Graham |

The front nut is unusual in that it has a large washer face that, if rusted, needs way more torque to free it than the 1/2" bolt would normally need. I needed a 3 ft btraker pipe to undo mine. |

Cheers guys, a job for next winter I feel. |
