MG MGA - Pint of MGA please landlord

Most Fridays, I meet up with some old friend for a pint at the engineers Arms. The Engineers is a proper pub and usually has about a dozen guest beers on the menu.

Todays selection included a cask ale from the Cottage Brewery in Somerset called MGA.

Very pleasant, so I had two pints!!

I just emailed them to ask. I also checked to see if they ship internationally. I'll post here when/if I get a response.

I assume you are familiar with the "Old Speckled Hen" beer - dedicated to the MG plant in Abingdon.
It is an excellent reddish colored beer and sold in bottles in the US (brewed in England by Morland.

Morland (of Abingdon) was taken over some years ago and production of Old Speckled Hen was moved to Bury Saint Edmunds.

No go on getting any MGA ale. They don't bottle it.

Looks like it's OSH or nothing. I can think of worse things.

Well its a shame to let it go to waste. I will pop down the Engineers Arms in Henlow at lunchtime, and raise a toast to all MGA owners.

Cheers....John

John, If they have a spare pump clip for the ale at the pub I wouldn't mind one to stick on my beer engine.

I contacted Cottage Brewery a week ago for one but they've not replied. Even money no object!......................Mike

Mike,

I have requested the pump clip, but it depends if they remember at barrel changing time. Apparently they usually go to a collector.

Thanks John, I'll cross my fingers..............Mike

You have me interested now. The same brewery does a Lightning pump badge.

The same brewery also brews an MGB ale, encountered in the Red Lion, East Chisenbury last Summer. Perhaps more of an acquired taste: heavier, not so smooth, a little rustier in colour? I was in overdrive after two pints. Good beer though. Shane

My local Tesco has "Old Crafty Hen" on offer - 3 for £5 - as they are currently priced at £2.79 each, I consider this a bargain.

It tastes very much like OSH but it is 7.5% ABV.

I had a couple of pints of MGA at The Woodman, Wildhill, Herts a couple of weeks ago. The landlord very kindly gave me the punp clip once the barrel had finished (for a small donation in his charity box). Looking at the picture on it - I think it's a Mark ll model.

As mentioned by Shane, the brewery also brew MGB bitter - nice, but not as classy!!
D J Hill

Must have been a difficult choice, as the Woodman keeps an excellent pint of Abbot Ale.

Mike,

I sent an email to Cottage Brewery about their beer, and got a very nice reply back from Cathy Godfrey. You might try emailing her direct for a spare pump clip - her email is cathy.godfrey@cottagebrewing.co.uk.

You're right, John, about the Abbott at The Woodman - always at it's best, but they have such a great variety of guest beers, I prefer to experiment. I haven't yet come across a bitter that I don't like - it's just I like some more than others!!

Thanks for the contact Dave, I'll drop her a line..................Mike

Thanks for the reminder about this brewery chaps and for Cathy's email address. I visited the brewery especially back in February and was promised an MGA beer clip and a list of pubs in my area. As nothing has happened yet I sent this Cathy a reminder... let's not hold our breath.

Thanks John that's great news! Can you send me an e-mail (magpiejazzataoldotcom) and we'll sort something out.

Pete, I hope you have better luck with Cottage Brewery than I had. But I sympathize with these micro breweries, they have so much work and so few staff that requests like these must be a pain.....................Mike

Thanks for Cathy's email address Dave. With a couple of emails back and forth, I got my MGA beer handle clip in the post yesterday ! The sad part is that they last brewed MGA Ale back in February so its unavailable anywhere at the moment. Keep us posted guys.
