MG MGA - Petronix coil and points

While reading a restoration book on Mustangs, the author noted that using a Petronix Coil designed for the Petronix electronic ignition system would damage the traditional points if they were installed instead. He indicated they would be fried fairly quickly. That's the combination I have but so far it's working. Anyone have any experience with this issue?

Bill,

We drove 6,500 miles in July from Vancouver to Ottawa with a pertronix Flamethrower coil and points in the distributor. Did not have any problems.

However, since our return the coil has died - guess the flame went out! We have had it about 2 years.

Checking on coils from several suppliers, and from different manufacturers, shows that they are actually all the same and appear to come from one manufacturer in Mexico. The name on the box is just a way to charge more for the same product.

It is important, i believe, to have a coil of around 3.2 ohms to be used without a ballast resistor, not the 1.6 ohms coil. However, the dead Pertronix coil still measures 3.2 ohms, so its failure may be HT related.

Peter,
Good to know. I will continue to monitor my setup and check the points more often.
