MG MGA - Pattern for short racing WS Glass

Does anyone have a pattern or dimensions for the short racing WS (windscreen) that was offered as a factory option? In my title I reference this as glass in the above title block, but I believe the WS was made from acrylic (perspex or plexiglass). All I have been able to find is pictures, and while it is possible to scale these, it would be nice to have a pattern with the correct dimensions, if the dimensions even exist.
There have been several variations--tall with the top rail in place, tall without the top rail, and short with no top rail as in the attached picture.
I seek dimensions to the short version.

James Johanski

James, I couldn't find anything out there that I liked for a windscreen for an MGA project I am working on. Here are some windscreens that I made out of billet aluminum with a milling machine for the frames and .25" lexan. They are folding and were modeled after old Ferrari 166 windscreens. I know these are a bit more involved than a one piece windscreen but I could give you the dimensions if you are interested.

I have a sports windscreen supplied by Bob West that is a reproduction of early Le Mans screens. Is this the type you are looking for? The stanchions are recast from the originals and are more swept than the standard stanchions. The screen is perspex.

You can get more details from Bob.

Having seen it in the "flesh" I can vouch for Steve's racing screen - really looks the part and is excellent quality.
Matt - your racing fly screens look good too - and the cockpit cover really sets it off.
Cam Cunningham

Matt, Thanks for the great pictures. That is one good looking WS, but I am looking to duplicate the short one as shown in the picture and Clausagers book.

Steve, thanks for the reference to your site. Looks like you have the tall WS that Clausager refers to. Bob West, as you know, also used that WS on 777 ENK. Can you tell me how tall the posts are?
James Johanski

I know this isn't what James is looking for either, but it's a very nice looking "A" windshield I've seen in the Portland area a couple of times. Someplace I've got a newspaper article about the car and owner.

The stanchion is slanted back 43 degrees from the vertical, using the fender line as the horizontal. It's only a few more degrees than the standard. Bob had the stanchions recast from original Le Mans stanchions (possibly LBJ301?). They are just under 5" tall (vertical measurement - see image; it shows 4.5" plus the 1/4" 'margin' at the end of the ruler!).

The windscreen supports are cut down standard frames, about 1/4" to 1/2" longer than the stanchion (see image). The internal corner brackets may have been refabricated to cater for the altered angles - not sure on this point.

Bob does a 7"ish screen, whereas mine is 10". The shorter one is more suitable for racing. I went for the 10" screen as a touring compromise, being slightly less draughty round the head and, I can also retain the original windscreen wiper length.

The plastic screens, as supplied, are quite costly - about £200 (but don't quote me on the exact price). I dare say you could make your own for far less. However, I do not know the optical qualities of standard curved perspex. I try not to use the wipers much as they tend to mark and I am for ever polishing the marks out.

I hope this all helps.

Matt, what colour do you plan to paint your car?
Mike Ellsmore

I don't know if this will help but I made one with all the old winshield parts. O bought a piece of plexiglass at Lowes and used the old broken winshield as a pattern to cut the bottom and then for the height I used the top of the winshield as a pattern and cut it just above where the support came into the stanchins. It seems to me that I cut the support off so only two of the support screws are attached to the upright stanchan. I used a special sealant that they sold at Lowes for attaching the plexiglass to the botton and side frame of the original winshield. I used nothing on the top of the winshield. I would show you an image if I knew how but it seems to work fine.
GK George

I simply cut down a stock frame and use a pelxi insert on the race car.

Bill Spohn

Mike, I'm planning on using the same color as the new Audi TT grey. Very similar to the original dove grey. I like the idea that not a lot of MGA's this color.

Matt, that's one of the coolest MGA's I've every seen. I thought that its in the finished colour -I love that slight military feel, I bet you would not show up on radar.
J H Cole

James - the car you show I built a few years ago. The height of the screen can easily vary depending on how tall you are. At 5'9" I still had to hunch down to be below the top of the windscreen.

I sure miss that MGA!

Ragtops and Roadsters make a beauty.

Or if your looking for something completely different...
We do produce these windscreens.

Another shot... we produce the LeMans tonneau cover as well.

Love your car MG Grover!

I made one for my MGA last years from an old windshield frame and I use a perplex glass . It's not so hard to cut, but I just follow the lines of the cowl . I have 7 inches at the center . I just need to send the frame to chrome and that's it . I like to drive my MGA with that sport winshield , it's look very cool .

Jules, you're right car looks fantastic! When you get the Judson fitted, it will go "fantastic" too!

If I compare the last picture to Steve Gyles' it's easy to see the extra rake in Bob West's stanchions.
Neil McGurk

Quite a few "sport" WS out there! You folks are inspirational! The look I am going for is best displayed by Jules.
Jules, do you keep your car in a garage or your living room?
James Johanski

Thank you Neil , I will normaly recieve my Judson next week .I will have to send it to George Folchi for rebuilt . It will probably be ready by the end of next summer .

James ,

This is my garage , i keep it as clean as I can and i like 50's and 60's decorations and stuffs .If you want more specific pictures of sport windshield , just ask .

Jules .
Jules Desbiens

Jules, off topic I know but fyi...I had asked George about the Judson you bought while it was still listed on ebay. From the photos, he gave me a ball park "guess"-timate of about $1500 to rebuild it, not including the missing valve cover.
Andy Bounsall

Thank's Andy , I will check with George . I have now an idea for the rebuilt cost .

Jules .
Jules Desbiens

Jules, A very nice garage indeed. I could live there! Your WS version is the one I wish to duplicate. It looks similiar to the one shown in the Clausager Book and also to a picutre in the Bob Vitrikas book. In regard to your WS--could you please tell me the height of the outer posts from the base to the shortened end, the distance between the two screw holes on the posts, and the height of the center glass from the bottom edge of the frame to the top of the trimmed glass. Thank you for your help,
James Johanski

James ,

Email me off board with your direct Email adress , i will send you better pics with all the details need in high resolution mode if you want .

Jules,

If you send me pics and details I will post it on my web site. I am particularly curious about what appears to be a small steel tube frame piece just below top behind the pane.

It may be my eyesight but isn't that small steel tube frame in fact a shadow caused by the camera flash?

Jules. Did you fit that exhaust pipe deflector I posted for you from the UK? I would be interested to see a picture of it in place.

Steve.
Steve Gyles

Steve ,

Yes I have fitted the exhaust pipe deflector . It's change the exhaust sound a little bit and help to avoid the return smell too .

Enjoy this one and if you want ,Email me , i'll send you severals pics .

would love to get that look on my A!
OSD Dovale

MG grover do you create these and sell?

Where does the fairing behind the seat on the BRG on the K Borwn site come from? That is a beautiful MGA!!
Russ
Russ Carnes

Russ, my guess is the headfairning came from Auto Vintagery in La Jolla, CA

http://www.autovintagery.com/index.html

I have one as well and found a way to attach it without damaging or altering the car.

Look under accessories on Barney's site for the dove grey car with the headfairing.
