MG MGA - panels and paint colors, too

Hey Barney et al.,

Thanks for that insight to the black chassis color. On another note, I was at the Queens English British Car Show last weekend at Woodley Park in Van Nuys, Ca. Impressive collection of British Marques and always is exciting as Jay Leno brings one or two of his impressive collection to view there. One was a steam powered roadster...amazing car.

In any case, on the MGA's which I was perusing, there is a panel beneath the bulkhead, which I cannot view in the exploded diagrams to name it but is runs perpendicular down the front facing to the engine, that was also painted black on the cars. So, my question is, what black paint should I use? Should I use a gloss black for all this chassis or satin black or flat? Is it different from any of the chassis parts to that panel or what I would appreciate any input on what to use as I am about to embark on this repainting, soon. Thanks all.

Steve, gloss is best. It sheds dirt better than matt.

Original paint for the chassis bulkhead closure panel is same as the chassis, Chassis Black, which is a satin finish, just shy of semi-gloss but not matt black.

On the flip side, concours judging is not all about originality. Surprise! You start with original, then re-aline panels better than factory original, and spit-shine and polish to the end of the world. In the end any bare metals may be polished to bright finish (never original), and Chassis Black mysteriously becomes Gloss Black (never original). I hate highly polished metals and gloss black chassis on a concours car, but it seems to be a concours winner either way. If you prefer gloss black, go for it, as I have never seen concours points deducted for the wrong "black" on an MGA chassis.

Hey Barney,

So tell me, is the heater box painted gloss black?

Originally satin black, like everything else. As far as I know there was nothing originally painted gloss gloss black (except sometimes the body color).
