MG MGA - Panard Rod?
| In the recent sway bar thread, among his helpful comments, Bill Spohn mentioned a panard rod. I have seen them frequently referenced in relation to MGB's can they be installed on an A? Effective? Are they availible for an A? Steve |

| Steve, the object of a Panhard rod is to limit the ability of the rear end to shift sideways under cornering forces - this can result in tires rubbing against the body among other things. The problem is that the mounts for the rod must be pretty hefty to do the job as the side forces can be considerable. On the race car I use a modified lower spring plate on one side, with a mount welded on. It is the other end that is more challenging as you need the bar to be more or less level at ride height and there is nothing there to attach it to, so you have to engineer a new member that drops down from the frame and is welded firmly and braced to take the force the rear end will put on it. That isn't an easy or cheap job and doesn't lend itself to aftermarket production, which tends to favour easy cheap products. I would prefer to use a Watts link instead, for technical reasons I won't go into, but as my race car retains the original gas tank, there is no room to fit one. Then there are the traction bars, and the top locating arm to limit wind up, and....... |
