MG MGA - Oil thrower disintergrated

I had about 1000 miles on my newly rebuilt 1600 engine when it developed a hollow sounding knock from the front of the engine. I removed the timing cover and found that the oil thrower had completely disintergrated. Apparently no damage was done. On close examination it looks like there are fatigue stress cracks in the oil thrower. This must be a really rare occurence. I also have 2 MGBs with high mileage and never had this occur before. Anyone else ever seen this before.

The oil thrower shows very severe damage. This would not happen unless the thrower came into contact with something. Possibly the timing chain. Most likely the thrower was assembled facing the wrong way.
As well as facing the right way it must be the correct size to clear the front seal.
Have a look at Barney's website.

Looks like it was installed backward and caught the timing chain. The lip has to face forward, and it must be used with an original MGA timing cover (or maybe very early MGB). Later MGB used a flatter cover and different oil thrower. See link above.

Barney and Mick, I believe that the oil thrower was installed with the concave side facing the timing cover as far as I recollect, but the oil thrower was an original one from the 1600 MGA engine and the timing cover is from a late model MGB with the timing marks facing up. I note after reading Barney's site that he states that DO NOT fit the early MGA oil thrower with the later MGB timing cover. Perhpaps there is an interference with the cover.

Thanks for your help

The difference in slingers is that one has a depression of about 1/16" in the centre which moves the sharp side of the face back a bit from the cover.

Difference in oil throwers is the early one has a lip forward and can only be used with the early covers. Later one is nearly flat with a slight rearward offset and must be used with later covers. Late thrower with early cover is mostly ineffective. Early thrower with late cover will chew a slot in the cover. BTDT.

Moss Motors has listed the same part number for both applications. Last I knew they were only supplying the later MGB oil thrower. They have not had the proper oil thrower for the MGA for decades now, even though they have a part number in the catalog and will happily sell you the wrong part without comment.

Many thanks for your input guys. I've ordered a new one from Moss and should be back on the road soon.
