MG MGA - Oil temp gauge

Just fitted an oil temperature gauge which seems to be working fine, it's a mechanical capillary plumbed into the line to the oil cooler.

Thing is, what sort of temp should I be expecting given it's getting cooler now? I am getting around 65c. That normal?

Good to be back in the saddle at the weekend for the first time after over a year out with a badly busted leg. (some may remember a thread on conversion to automatic about 6 months ago, didn't need to).

Glad to hear that your leg has healed.

I would have thought that it should read about the same as the water temp, possibly a tad cooler as the oil cooler gets the cool air first.

What water temp are you getting?

That sounds about right Dominic, 65c being about 150 and my water gauge is reading around 175 at the same time.

Thanks.

As a potential solution to reducing the overall engine temperature, I fitted an oil cooler, with a thermostatically controlled valve, pre-set at 80 degrees C. In two years of varied motoring, including some brisk summer driving in the Alps, the temperature never got above 65 and presumably, the thermostat never opened and the oil cooler was never called on to do its job. I took the whole lot off and sold it on ebay.

Nice one Geoff - I often wondered why we need oil coolers. Oils are usually OK up to 150 deg C anyway.
