MG MGA - OIl on my Ankle!

Hi Guy’s, Been tooling around for two fun weeks since I got the car on the road after two years. I noticed my Right Ankle kept acquiring spots of oil. Finally realized it drips from the Speedo when driving (Ever so slightly). Needless to say, Wife not happy about 4 pairs of newly oiled pants to add to the collection! Question is, does the cable “Pump” the trans oil up the cable when operating? If so I hope this is not filing up my newly rebuilt speedometer! I Am hoping it is a matter of just tightening the cable nut behind the meter.
Thanks!

WMR Bill

Bill,
There should be no oil in the cable. The cable is lubricated with grease. There is a seal in the speedometer drive in the gearbox that probably needs to be replaced. I have not done it, but the drive can be removed from under the car without removing the gearbox. Barney has a couple of pages about the drive with helpful hints about replacing the seal. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/gearbox/gt103.htm http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/gearbox/gt106.htm

If you remove the speedo drive, remember to drain the oil in the box first as the drive is below the oil level....
