MG MGA - oil addative

has anyone heard of or tried the oil additive put out by Motorhead called Hi-Z Lubricant? Its supposed to have a lot of Zinc in it which is lacking in the oils producted today. Tom

Tom:

I haven't heard anything about the Motorhead product, but you might find the information at www.zddplus.com of interest. (Moss has this product in their catalog and on their web site)

I have no interest in this company; however I used it for the first time last week when I changed the oil in my MGA. (one 4oz. bottle with 4 - 5 qts of oil)

I have decided to switch to the Classic Car Oil that Moss sells instead of using the ZDDP additive. My reasons are that it works out to be not that more expensive given the amount of oil changes we do in a year. Also if you use the additive what happens if you tend to use or lose a lot of oil between changes. This woild mean you would have to have another container of ZDDP to add each time you topped up your oil. It just seems easier to buy the oil with additive included.

Excellent point; makes good sense. I had not thought about that. I wonder who makes the Classic Car Oil that Moss sells?

I understand that Castrol has recently come out with a similar Classic Car oil that is supposed to have added Zinc back into the "formula". I don't know how widely distributed it is.

Castrol is selling a synthetic 20/50 with the additive. Here is the link. It is only available in the US.

A little background...

http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html

I use Royal Purple synthetic oil. When I first changed from Castrol 20-40 GTX with about 500 miles on it to it I actually had to set the idle down about 300 rpm! Cold idle through hot was 6 psi greater with no wobble of the guage at hot idle.
No more metal in the oil plug magnet.
